Men's Tennis Takes Down Duquesne 6-1

Steven Karl Wins 64th Career Singles Match, Tied For Eighth In Program History

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Dayton men's tennis finished off the weekend in Pittsburgh with a 6-1 victory over Duquesne on Sunday afternoon. Senior Steven Karl won his 64th career singles match in the victory, tying Jordan Benjamin and Brad Nykiel for eighth in program history in the win.
 
The Flyers improve to 12-6 and 2-0 in conference play, while Duquesne falls to 6-7 and 1-1 against A-10 opponents.
 
The match opened with Dayton taking the doubles point. Senior Will Harper and junior Connor Bruce took down Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal and Tamirlan Teberikov 7-5 in the top doubles flight, and sophomore Ronit Hiryur and freshman Eric Perkowski clinched a 1-0 lead in No. 3 doubles, winning 7-5 over Alex Mascioli and Joey Matthews.
 
Dayton continued that momentum into singles play, taking five of six singles flights against the Dukes. Hiryur opened by winning his 16th match of the season in No. 2 singles over Rodriguez-Vidal in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Bruce followed him, setting a career high in wins in a season with his 15th win of the campaign in straight sets over Kaipo Marshall 7-6, 6-1 in the top singles flight to go up 3-0.
 
Duquesne took No. 3 singles before junior Matt DeMarco clinched his second-straight match with a straight-set win over Jin Dassanayake 6-1, 6-2 in No. 4 singles. Perkowski won his second match of the weekend in No. 5 singles, besting Teberikov 6-2, 6-3 and Karl finished the match with his win over Bode Vance 6-1, 6-1 in the sixth singles flight.
 
The Flyers will take next weekend off from competition before returning for a conference battle with Davidson on April 8 at 3 p.m. in Davidson, N.C.
