ARLINGTON, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team fell on Sunday 9-4 in the series finale at George Washington at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va. Sophomore
Eli Majick struck out six in 4.2 innings in relief in the loss.
Junior
Jose Martinez had an RBI double and scored two runs for the Flyers, and senior
Marcos Pujols drew three walks against the Colonials.
The Flyers sit at 12-15 and 2-4 in the Atlantic 10. George Washington improves to 17-15 and 5-1 in A-10 play.
ON THE MOUND
Graduate student
Andrew Zapka started the game for the Flyers, getting the first out of the game and giving up two earned runs. Majick entered for Zapka and would pitch through the fifth inning striking out six and allowing just one earned run in 4.2 innings in relief.
Sophomore
Parker Bard entered to start the sixth, also getting one out and allowing two runs on one hit before giving the ball to junior
Nick Maue. Maue faced the next four batters, giving up three earned runs on two hits.
Junior
Anthony Hattrup would go the next two innings, allowing just one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts, pitching into the eighth for Dayton before junior
Cody Whitten entered the game and got the last two outs for the Flyers.
SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 1: (2-0 Colonials)
The Colonials opened the game with a walk and a base hit through the right side before a groundout to Pujols advanced the runners to second and third. A base hit put the Flyers down a run. George Washington drew a walk to load the bases and two batters later another walk made it a 2-0 game.
Top 4: (2-2 Tie)
Graduate student
Henry Strmecki was hit by a pitch and junior
Keagan Calero bunted him to second base. Martinez drove Strmecki in with a double down the right field line, would get to third on a ground out by graduate student
Alexis Castillo, and score on a passed ball to tie the game at two.
Top 5: (3-2 Flyers)
Senior
Jake Silverstein legged out an infield single to open the inning and a single by junior
Ben Jones put two on. Two batters later the pair advanced on a wild pitch, prompting the Colonials to intentionally walk Pujols to load the bases. Strmecki put Dayton ahead with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Silverstein from third.
Bottom 5: (3-3 Tie)
Two singles by the Colonials put two on and a third base hit to right field tied the game at 3-3.
Bottom 6: (8-3 Colonials)
A leadoff home run put the Flyers down one. Bard walked the next batter and got a strikeout for the first out of the inning. An error by Maue put two runners on and a double followed by a three-run home run made it a five run lead for the Colonials.
Top 8: (8-4 Colonials)
Martinez drew a one-out walk and advanced two bases on a passed ball and wild pitch. A walk by redshirt freshman
Andrew Casey put runners on the corners and a sacrifice fly by freshman
Matt Maloney scored Martinez and cut the lead to four.
Bottom 8: (9-4 Colonials)
Two doubles brought home the ninth and final run of the game for the Colonials.

The Flyers will play at Day Air Ballpark for the first of three games at the home of the Dayton Dragons on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Ohio State.
