DAYTON – University of Dayton baseball head coach
Jayson King recorded win number 100 at Dayton in Saturday's 12-3 win over Massachusetts at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium. Senior
Jake Silverstein hit his first career home run as a Flyer in the win, driving in three runs for UD.
Â
Every starter recorded at least one hit for the Flyers offensively in King's milestone game, with junior
Ben Jones and graduate student
Alexis Castillo each driving in two runs on the day. The Flyers also dominated the basepaths, stealing six bases against the Minutemen. Junior
Jose Martinez stole three bases to tie the team's most in a game this season.
Â
The Flyers improve to 17-18 this season, 5-6 against A-10 opponents. UMass falls to 17-15-1 and 6-5 in conference play with the loss. It also marks the first time this season Dayton has taken a conference series after winning Friday afternoon against the Minutemen.
Â
ON THE MOUND
Junior
Mark Manfredi started the game for the Flyers and cruised through the first six innings against Massachusetts. The lefty retired the first nine hitters of the game and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. Manfredi finished with 6.2 innings pitched and eight strikeouts. A three-run seventh for UMass was the only success the Minutemen had against Manfredi.
Â
Junior
Nick Wissman entered the game for Manfredi and finished the seventh. Wissman retired three of the four batters he faced and pitched one inning on the mound. Junior
Anthony Hattrup finished the game for Dayton, going the last 1.1 scoreless innings and picking up a strikeout.

SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 1: (2-0 Flyers)
Junior
Keagan Calero led off the inning with a base hit to right field. He would steal second and advance to third on a throwing error before scoring on another UMass error. Martinez would reach on that misplay and steal second himself. Jones then singled up the middle, scoring Martinez and giving Dayton an early 2-0 lead.
Â
Bottom 3: (5-0 Flyers)
Calero again led off the inning with a base hit. He advanced to third on a single from junior
Marcos Pujols and scored on a wild pitch. Pujols would move to second on that wild pitch and score himself on a base hit to left field by Martinez. Martinez would then steal his second base of the day and score on another single by Jones to extend the lead to 5-0.
Â
Bottom 4: (6-0 Flyers)
Freshman
Matt Maloney led off the fourth with a hit by pitch. He stole second and two batters later would score on a base hit by Pujols to give the Flyers a six-run lead.
Â
Bottom 5: (10-0 Flyers)
Castillo started a two-out rally for Dayton with a base hit to left field. A single by senior
Jay Curtis put two on and Maloney drove Castillo home with a base hit to left center field to give Dayton their seventh run. Silverstein then stepped up and drove his first career collegiate home run over the left center field fence to put the Flyers in double digits for the second-straight game.
Â
Bottom 6: (12-0 Flyers)
Graduate student
Henry Strmecki hit a one-out triple. Martinez would follow that with a walk and a stolen base to put two in scoring position for Castillo, who singled them both home to give the Flyers their final runs of the game.
Â
Top 7: (12-3 Flyers)
UMass led off the inning with a home run to left field. Two batters later a base hit and a walk put two on with one out. Manfredi would get a fly out for the second out of the inning, but back-to-back singles brought home two more runs. Dayton would not allow another run the rest of the way, finalizing the score at 12-3.
