Baseball Completes Sweep Of UMass With 13-9 Win On Sunday

The Flyers Are Now 6-6 In A-10 Play

DAYTON – The University of Dayton baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Massachusetts on Sunday, defeating the Minutemen 13-9 at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium. Seniors Marcos Pujols and Jay Curtis and junior Jose Martinez all homered in the win.
 
The Flyers never trailed in the series and scored 38 runs in three games against the Minutemen and picked up each of their three highest hit totals of the season. Pujols went 3-for-3 and led the team with three RBIs. Martinez and graduate student Henry Strmecki each went 3-for-4 as well, and eight of the nine starters for Dayton picked up a base hit in the contest.
 
Dayton is back to .500 on the season with an 18-18 record and a 6-6 conference record. UMass falls to 17-16-1 and 6-6 against A-10 opponents.
 
ON THE MOUND
Graduate student Kenny Serwa got the start for the Flyers, going the first 4.1 innings on the mound. He allowed three earned runs, striking out seven Minutemen and pitching into the fifth. Sophomore Eli Majick went the next 1.2 innings, earning his fourth win of the season pitching into the sixth.
 
Graduate student Nick Meyer went the next 1.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits. Sophomore Parker Bard finished the game for the Flyers, pitching the final 1.1 innings allowing just two hits and no runs.
 
SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 1: (4-0 Flyers)
Junior Keagan Calero led off the inning with a base hit down the right field line. Pujols followed that with a double off the left center field wall. Calero scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field. Martinez walked and Pujols advanced to third on a wild pitch. Martinez would steal second to put two in scoring position and both runs would score on a base hit by junior Ben Jones. Curtis homered for the third time this year to put the Flyers up 4-0 after one inning.
 
Top 2: (4-1 Flyers)
Serwa struck out the first two batters of the inning before a home run to center field cut the Dayton lead to 4-1.
 
Bottom 2: (8-1 Flyers)
Freshman Matt Maloney led off the bottom of the second with a base hit. Senior Jake Silverstein was hit by a pitch and Calero moved them both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Pujols cleared the bases with his team-leading eighth home run of the season to make it 7-0 Dayton. Strmecki and Martinez both singled and stole second and third, and Jones drew a walk to load the bases. An RBI walk from Jay Curtis plated the eighth run of the game for Dayton.
 
Top 3: (8-3 Flyers)
A base hit and wild pitch put a runner in scoring position and a base hit to left field put runners on the corners. A passed ball scored the first run of the inning and after advancing to third a wild pitch cut the lead to five.
 
Top 4: (8-4 Flyers)
Massachusetts led off the inning with a double to left center and a single to the shortstop put runners on the corners and another base hit cut the lead to 8-4.
 
Bottom 4: (9-4 Flyers)
Martinez led off the fourth with a home run, extending the lead to 9-4 in favor of Dayton.
 
Bottom 5: (10-4 Flyers)
Pujols singled up the middle in the fifth inning and Strmecki moved him into scoring position. Martinez drove home a run with another base hit to extend the lead to 10-4.
 
Top 6: (10-6 Flyers)
Massachusetts scored their two runs in the sixth on three singles to cut Dayton's lead to 10-6.
 
Bottom 6: (13-6 Flyers)
Curtis led off the inning with a hit by pitch and graduate student Alexis Castillo reached on an infield single. Maloney reached on an error to load the bases and Silverstein drove in a run on a fielder's choice. He and Maloney advanced on a wild pitch and Calero drove in another run with a sacrifice fly. A wild pitch scored Silverstein to score the 13th run of the game for Dayton.
 
Top 7: (13-9 Flyers)
Back-to-back walks followed by a wild pitch put two in scoring position. Meyer struck out the first batter he faced but another walk loaded the bases. A wild pitch scored the first run of the inning and a base hit to right field made it 13-9 and finalized the scoring for the afternoon.
