Baseball Falls 12-1 At Kentucky Tuesday Night

The Flyers Will Take On VCU At Day Air Ballpark On Friday

Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Dayton baseball fell on the road at Kentucky 12-1 in seven innings on Tuesday night at Kentucky Proud Park in Lexington. Junior Ben Jones hit his first home run in a Dayton uniform in the loss.
 
The Flyers drop to 18-19 with the loss in their final road midweek contest of the regular season. Kentucky improves to 23-18. The game was called after seven innings due to the mercy rule.
 
Offensively, junior Jose Martinez extended his team-long hitting streak to 15 consecutive games with an infield single in the top of the sixth. Freshman Matt Maloney led the team with two hits, going 2-for-3 on the evening.
 
ON THE MOUND
Redshirt junior Cody Whitten started the game on the mound for the Flyers, pitching the first full inning for Dayton, striking out two, allowing eight runs on six hits. Sophomore Parker Bard entered in the second for Whitten, pitching two scoreless innings and also picking up a pair of strikeouts.
 
Sophomore Austin Brush started the fourth inning for Dayton, getting the first two outs, allowing four runs on four hits before giving way to junior Thomas Braybrooks. Braybrooks did not allow a hit in his 1.1 innings on the mound.
 
Junior Nick Maue entered in the bottom of the sixth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning on nine pitches.
 
SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 1: (5-0 Wildcats)
Whitten retired two of the first three hitters before a walk and three straight singles made it a 3-0 game. With two on a double off the left field wall extended the deficit to five.
 
Top 2: (5-1 Wildcats)
Jones hit his first home run of the season over the left field fence to cut the lead to 5-1.
 
Bottom 2: (8-1 Wildcats)
Back-to-back walks followed by a three-run home run put the Flyers down 8-1 through the first two innings.
 
Bottom 4: (12-1 Wildcats)
Kentucky led off the inning with a single, but a fielder's choice and a fly out gave the Flyers two outs. A stolen base put a runner in scoring position and a base hit to left made it a 9-1 game. Another stolen base and a double made it a nine-run deficit. An error followed by a stolen base, a balk and another single finalized the score at 12-1.
 
UP NEXT
The Flyers will start a series against VCU on Friday night at Day Air Ballpark. The first game of the series will begin at 7 p.m. and will honor Daniel Isufi, the Director of Baseball Operations for the Flyers in conjunction with the Lupus Foundation of America to both raise awareness and funds for Lupus.
