Men's Tennis Falls In A-10 Championship Match

The Flyers Fell 4-0 To VCU And Finish 16-8 This Season

Box Score ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Dayton men's tennis team fell just short of an A-10 title, falling in the Atlantic 10 Championship match to VCU 4-0 at USTA National Campus in Orlando. It marked the first time the Flyers advanced to the title match since 2018.

The Flyers finish the 2022 season with a 16-8 record, winning 16 of their final 21 matches to end the year. VCU improves to 21-6 and win their fifth-straight A-10 Championship.

Dayton entered the Atlantic 10 Championship as the three seed, shutting out their first two opponents of Saint Louis and Saint Joseph's 4-0 before taking on the Rams on Sunday morning. The Flyers were unable to continue that momentum into the title match, falling in doubles play and then dropping three singles matches.

Senior Will Harper and junior Connor Bruce paired to compete well for the Flyers in the top doubles flight, tying it at 4-4, but senior Joe DeMarco and sophomore Ronit Hiryur fell in No. 3 doubles 6-1 to Joaquim Almeida and Matisse Bobichon. VCU followed that with a win on Court Two, with senior Steven Karl and junior Matt DeMarco dropping the point to Inigo Torre Martin and Rayane Stable 6-1 to put the Flyers down 1-0.

In singles play, freshman Eric Perkowski fell in No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-1 to Rayane Stable. Perkowski won his first two matches in straight sets in the A-10 Championship. The Rams also took the point in No. 3 singles, with Inigo Torre Martin defeating Harper 6-1, 6-4 and VCU clinched the match on Court Four, with Matisse Bobichon knocking off Matt DeMarco 6-2, 7-5.

Karl and Harper end their Dayton careers as the winningest class in program history. The pair helped lead the Flyers to 71 wins in their time at UD, four A-10 Semifinal apperances, and two trips the conference championship match.

Harper finishes his career with 38 career singles victories, the 22nd most in program history, winning his first dual match of the season by clinching a 4-3 win over Xavier. The President of SAAC and the recipient of this year's RUDY Award, given to the student-athlete who most exemplifies what it means to be a Dayton Flyer.

Karl started this season tied for 10th in program history in singles victories and made his way up to sixth, passing Brad Nykiel, Jordan Benjamin, and Jonathan Khoury on his way up the leaderboard. His 68 career singles wins paired with his 53 doubles wins ranks sixth in program history with 121 career total wins.
Joe DeMarco is the third and final senior this season, finishing tied for 13th in program history with 37 doubles wins. DeMarco is tied with Simon Jayaram and proved himself to be one of the most elite doubles players Dayton has seen.
