DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's soccer team was back in action Thursday night, as they played host to the
George Washington Colonials at Baujan Field. On a chilly night in Dayton, the Flyers offense came alive, scoring a season-high six goals to cruise to a 6-0 victory.
Â
With the win, the Flyers have now won eight consecutive matches, matching their highest consecutive win total since 2013. Dayton improves to 11-1-1 with the win, and also improves to 5-0 in Atlantic 10 play, which propels them into first place in the conference with Saint Louis not in action Thursday. The Colonials fall to 3-3-5, 0-3-2 in A-10 play, which drops them to 14
th of 15 teams in the standings.
Â
KEY MOMENT
In a first half that didn't see the first shot on goal until the 17
th minute of the match, Dayton would find their breakthrough just two minutes later on
Laney Huber's third goal of the season, a goal that would prove to be the match-winner.
Â
Huber's strike would be the only scoring in the first half, as a tight match at the halftime whistle would turn out to be anything but in half number two.
Itala Gemelli would net her ninth goal of the season just nine minutes into the second frame, setting the tone for what would be a five-goal second half for the Flyers. Huber would score her second of the match to make it 5-0 after
Jessica Sheldon and
Diana Benigno each netted a goal, and
Mia Perri would close out the scoring for the night in the 75
th minute.
