Women's Soccer Returns to Winning Ways Against Bellarmine

Flyers Use Huge Shot Advantage To Earn Non-Conference Win

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Dayton women's soccer team returned to action on the road Sunday, as they took on the Bellarmine Knights out of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Flyers battled to a 1-0 victory, one that included a 75-minute weather delay.

The Flyers improve to 4-1-1 on the young season, remaining unbeaten on the road in the 2022 campaign. The Knights fall to 0-2-3 with the loss, after playing four Horizon League opponents prior to the Flyers.

KEY MOMENT
Just twelve minutes into Sunday's match, the Flyers caught a break on offense, as Jessica Sheldon and Itala Gemelli found themselves charging down the left side of the field. Sheldon dropped a perfect pass to the feet of Gemelli, and just as she has all season, the junior forward made no mistake, scoring the game-winning goal for the Flyers with her left foot.

SCORING SUMMARY
Gemelli's fourth tally of the season was the only scoring play of the match, winning the Flyers their fourth match of the year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Flyers posted their fourth clean sheet of the season on Sunday, limiting the Knights to just five total shots, three of which on goal.
  • Gemelli's goal Sunday was her third match-winner of the season, and her four goals on the year are tied for the Atlantic 10 lead.
  • Batoul Reda is now tied among Dayton goalkeepers for the most minutes played (225), after splitting Sunday's match with senior Madelyn Dewey.

UP NEXT
Dayton will remain on the road this week, as they will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to take on the Butler Bulldogs on Thursday night. Following Thursday's 7:00 p.m. kick-off, the Flyers will return home for a Sunday afternoon match-up against the Akron Zips. Prior to Sunday's 1:00 p.m. kick-off, the Flyers will honor the program's 10 senior student-athletes.
