DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will head back out on the road Thursday, Nov. 16 to take on in-state foe Ohio University at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center in Athens.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton enters the week with a 1-1 record on the season and coming off a big 91-73 win at home over Lindenwood Sunday. The Flyers' lone loss this season came on the road at No. 2 UConn.
Williams-Jeter is in her second season in charge of her hometown Flyers, coming over after a year at Wittenberg. She has assistant coaching stops at Kansas, Kentucky, Penn State, and Ohio State.
The Flyers are averaging 74.5 points per game and giving up 87.5 points to opponents. Dayton is shooting 44.7 percent overall, 30.8 percent from three point range, and 75.6 percent from the free throw line. UD faces -0.5 rebounding and -6.0 turnover margins as well.
Leading the way for the Flyers is junior
Arianna Smith with 16.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game while senior
Anyssa Jones is chipping in 14.0 points and graduate student
Mariah Perez is adding 11.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING OHIO
Ohio hosts Dayton with a 1-0 record overall after falling on the road at Appalachian State 71-64 in the season opener. The Bobcats were 2-11 at home last year.
Head coach Bob Boldon is in his 11th season at the helm of Ohio and is the program's all-time winningest coach.
As a team, Ohio is scoring 64.0 points each outing and allowing 71.0 points to opposing teams. The Bobcats are shooting 43.6 percent from the field, 38.9 percent from behind the arc, and 52.9 percent from the charity stripe. OU has to overcome a -26 rebounding margin however.
The Bobcats are led by Bailey Tabeling, Bengisu Alper, and Laylay Fantroy, who are each averaging 10.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Madi Mace is contributing 7.0 points and 7.0 boards per game.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 15th meeting in program history with the Flyers holding a 10-4 series advantage. The Bobcats won the matchup last season through 52-51 at UD Arena.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton earned a 91-73 win over Lindenwood in the home opener Sunday. Smith powered the offense in her season debut with 16 points and 15 rebounds while Jones had a team-high 17 points. The Flyers scored 22+ points each of the four quarters.
Ohio fell at on the road at Appalachian State Saturday, 71-64, despite the Bobcats jumping out to a 23-7 lead after the first quarter. The Mountaineers responded by outscoring OU 31-7 in the final quarter to earn the win.
FLYERS PICKED NINTH IN PRESEASON POLL
Dayton was picked to finish ninth in the 2023-24 Atlantic 10 preseason poll, two spots up from where the Flyers finished last season. UD was chosen ahead of VCU, their 2023 A-10 Tournament opponent, last year's regular season champion UMass, La Salle, and Fordham. Rhode Island was tabbed as the A-10 preseason favorite ahead of Saint Joseph's, the 2023 A-10 Tournament Champion Saint Louis, and Richmond.
PEREZ NAMED THIRD TEAM PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE
Graduate student
Mariah Perez was selected to the All-Atlantic 10 Preseason Third Team ahead of the upcoming campaign. The New Jersey native is coming off a career season in which she was named the team's Most Improved Player. She started all 27 games and had career highs with 11.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
THREE POINTS OF EXCELLENCE
Dayton has hit at least one three-point shot in 682 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 2, 2001, the longest streak in the Atlantic 10 Conference and one of the top streaks in the nation. The Flyers made a program-record 15 three-point field goals against Buffalo in the Connecticut World Vision Classic on Nov. 25, 2011. Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.
70'S THE MAGIC NUMBER
Since the 2009-10 season, Dayton is 193-25 (.891) when scoring 70 or more points, including 11-0 in 2021-22. During the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Flyers only lost one game per season when scoring at least 70 points, and dropped only two games in 2019-20 when reaching that mark.
