DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will finish up the 2022-23 regular season this Saturday on the road at the University of Rhode Island. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton heads to the east coast on a two-game winning streak and a 5-9 record in Atlantic 10 play. The Flyers are 6-19 on the season and 3-7 in road games.
Head coach
Tamika Williams-Jeter is in her first season in charge of her hometown Flyers, coming over after a year at Wittenberg. She has assistant coaching stops at Kansas, Kentucky, Penn State, and Ohio State.
As a team this year, the Flyers are averaging 65.7 points per game and giving up 70.0 points to opposing teams. Dayton is shooting 41.0 percent overall, 34.6 percent from three point range, and 72.1 percent from the free throw line. UD is one of the top rebounding teams in the conference with a +5.7 margin.
Dayton is led by a pair of double-double threats in senior
Mariah Perez with 12.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game as well as sophomore
Arianna Smith with 10.1 points and 9.0 rebounds each outing. Senior
Sydney Freeman is chipping in 10.9 points and 4.7 assists per game as well.
SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND
Rhode Island wraps up their regular season with a 22-5 record on the year and 13-2 league mark. The Rams are 12-1 at home this season and has lost two of their last three games. URI can clinch at least a share of the A-10 title with a win Saturday.
Head coach Tammi Reiss was named A-10 Coach of the Year for the 2020-21 season and is in her third year with the Rams.
As a team, URI is scoring 68.4 points each outing and holding opposing squads to just 56.9 points per game. The Rams are shooting 42.7 percent from the field, 35.7 percent from behind the arc, and 67.7 percent from the charity stripe. Rhode Island benefits from a +7.8 rebounding margin as well.
The Rams are led by Maye Toure with 13.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game while VCU transfer Madison Hattix-Covington is adding 10.3 points and 5.0 boards each contest. Former Flyer
Tenin Magassa has appeared in eight games for the Rams with 4.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton picked up its second straight victory with a 65-51 decision over La Salle Wednesday. The Flyers had five players in double digits and three double-doubles from
Arianna Smith,
Mariah Perez, and
Anyssa Jones.
Rhode Island suffered a heartbreaking 73-74 overtime loss to Fordham on the road Wednesday after a game-winning buzzer beater. Maye Toure had team-highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds in the effort.
SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and Rhode Island have met 31 times previously with the Flyers holding a 27-4 series advantage. UD has won 19 straight match-ups dating back to 2004, including both contests last year by double digits.
STATISTICAL RANKINGS
As a team, Dayton ranks 22nd in the nation in rebounds per game and 30th in defensive rebounding. Individually,
Mariah Perez is 14th in the country in offensive rebounding and 35th in total rebounding.
