DAYTON - The University of Dayton baseball team dropped the series finale against Eastern Illinois Monday, March 6, by a score of 9-6 at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium. The FlyBoys and Panthers split the series, each winning two games.
Dayton jumped ahead early with a pair of runs in the first inning. Afer EIU struck back to tie the game in the third, UD plated another run on a
Ben Jones home run. Junior
Paxton Tomaini expanded the lead with his first homer as a FlyBoy an inning later, but the Panthers did not go away quietly.
After a back-and-forth battle, the Panthers collected five runs in the seventh that pushed the visitors ahead by a 9-4 tally.
Dayton struck back for a run in the bottom of the seventh and mounted a dangerous rally in the ninth. The FlyBoys scored one run on a single by junior
Carlos Castillo, but they left the bases loaded as the rally fizzled out.
Jones led the team with three hits, including a home run and a double. Tomaini also added a home run and double of his own in a 2-for-5 performance.
