FAIRFAX, Va. - The University of Dayton baseball team won in dramatic fashion over George Mason Friday, scoring four runs over the final two innings to come back and win 6-5 over the Patriots to begin its three-game Atlantic 10 series at Spuhler Field.
Trailing 5-2 in the eighth inning, UD loaded the bases with nobody out and then again with one out after an RBI groundout. Senior
Keagan Calero drove home the Flyers' fourth run of the game with his second hit of the contest, bringing Dayton within one run.
In their final at-bat, the FlyBoys loaded the bases with only one out, and thanks to back-to-back bases-loaded hit-by-pitches drawn by
Omar Daniels and Calero, UD took the lead for the first time in the contest.
The bottom of the ninth was filled with dramatics as well, as the first two Patriots reached base. Junior
Parker Bard came in from the bullpen to strike out the first batter he faced and then induced an infield fly to the next batter. The ball dropped between third baseman
Mason Dobie and shortstop
Carlos Castillo, but because of the infield fly rule, the runners did not need to advance. The lead runner took off for third and made it safely, but as the trail runner attempted to advance to second, Dobie threw him out to end the game.
