#FlyBoys Smash UMass, Record Book, in 32-14 Victory

Dayton Set A New Program Record For Runs Scored

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Dayton baseball team erupted for a record-breaking 32 runs in the series opener with the University of Massachusetts Thursday afternoon, topping the Minutemen 32-14 at Earl Lorden Field.

Senior Keagan Calero led the way with four hits, including a home run, five RBI, four runs scored and a walk. The offense clicked from top to bottom, as sophomores Matt Maloney and David Pedanou each tallied three-hit games for the #FlyBoys. Maloney, who also reached base twice via walk, scored four times, and drove home two, while Pedanou became the first UD player to hit two triples in the same game in the last decade. The Worcester, Mass. native drove home four runs, scored four more, and also reached base via free pass.

Six other Flyers had two-hit performances (Mason Dobie, Marcos Pujols, Jose Martinez, Zachary Scott, Nolan Watson and Jay Curtis), while Marcos Pujols and Carlos Castillo provided additional fireworks with home runs. Pujols' long ball gives him 12 on the season and 39 for his career, putting him in second place in UD history.

While only have one hit on the day, senior Omar Daniels reached base five times (one hit, one walk, two hit-by-pitch and one error) and scored all five times.

Dayton scored at least one run in eight-of-nine innings, including a season-high and program-best (since 2015) 13 runs in the sixth inning alone. In total, the #FlyBoys had five multi-run innings and pounded out 25 base hits.

BY THE NUMBERS
39 - career home runs for Marcos Pujols, now in sole possession of second place all-time

25 - most hits in a game this season and most since 2015
4 - runs scored by Calero, Maloney and Pedanou.
