RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Dayton men's basketball team saw its 13-game winning streak – the longest in the nation -- fall by the wayside Saturday in front of a sellout crowd at Richmond by the score of 69-64.
Dayton falls to 16-3 overall, and 6-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. UD entered the game ranked 16th in the AP poll and 18th in the Coaches Poll . Richmond moves into sole possession of first place in the A-10 at 7-0. The Spiders are now 15-5 on the season.
Javon Bennett led UD with 18 points, backed by
Kobe Elvis (11 points) and
Koby Brea (10).
GAME RECAP
1st Half – Richmond 20, Dayton 15
• Neither team scored for almost three minutes.
•
Kobe Elvis got the scoring started with a three-pointer at the 17:15 mark.
• Triples by
DaRon Holmes II and
Nate Santos gave UD a 9-0 lead.
• Richmond scored the next seven points to make the score Dayton 9, Richmond 7 with 9:50 left in the half.
• The game was tied at 13 with 3:53 left in the half, and again at 15 with 2:34 left, and then Richmond scored the final five points of the period to take a five-point lead.
2nd Half – Richmond 69, Dayton 64
• A pair of free throws by Elvis opened the scoring in the second half.
• But Richmond pushed its lead back to eight (27-19) with 17:52 to go.
• The Flyers battled back to tie it 32-32 four minutes later, and took a 35-34 lead with 12:20 left on an
Enoch Cheeks free throw.
• The Spiders would score the next three points, the Flyers tied it 37-37 with 9:58 to go, and the next Richmond points would give the Spiders a lead the would not give up.
• Richmond grabbed its largest lead of the night, 56-47, with 3:22 to go, but UD battled back to within three (56-53) a minute later.
• Richmond maintained a two-possession advantage until 12 seconds left when
Javon Bennett sank a pair of free throws.
• Richmond added two more freebies with eights second to go to make the final 69-64.
