Box Score DAYTON – The 21st-ranked University of Dayton men's basketball team got back in the win column Tuesday with an 83-61 win over George Washington
DaRon Holmes II led the way with 25 points and 12 rebounds followed by Nate Santos and Koby Brea who recorded 17 points each.
UD is 17-3 overall and ranked 21st in the latest AP poll and 19th in the Coaches poll. George Washington is 14-7 overall and 3-5 in Atlantic 10 play.
GAME RECAP
First Half- Dayton 38, George Washington 24
• George Washington would start the game with a three, but a block by DaRon Holmes II would lead to Nate Santos drawing a foul and putting the Flyers on the board after knocking down one of two free throws.
• Both teams would go on a cold streak over the next several minutes until Koby Brea knocked down a corner three out of the media timeout to give the Flyers their first lead of the game at 4-3.
• After a scoring drought that spanned more than two minutes, Nate Santos finished a tough layup through contact to give the Flyers a four-point lead at 9-5.
• At the under-12 media timeout, the Flyers found themselves on a 12-2 run over the last 6:41.
• Holmes would finish off an alley-oop from Kobe Elvis on the next possession to electrify the crowd and push the Flyers even further ahead.
• Coming out of the media timeout Santos extended the lead with a finish through contact and a three building the Flyers momentum and lead to 24-9. Over the next six minutes, Santos would score 14 of Dayton's 16 points.
• After a George Washington basket it would be Santos to strike yet again with his second consecutive three making him three for three from behind the arc on the night.
• Holmes finished a layup through a foul and successfully converted the layup to extend the lead to 38-24 in the final minute of the half.
• At the end of the half Santos leads all scorers with 17 points. Holmes leads the way with seven boards.
Second Half- Dayton 83, George Washington 61
• George Washington got on the board first in the second half but Holmes drew a foul and knocked down his two shots to bring the Flyer lead back to 14.
• Holmes tallied the first eight points of the half for Dayton after a dunk in the paint and a put-back finish extended the lead to 46-30 with 16:23 to play.
• Santos found Jack in the paint for a two-handed slam to give the Flyers their largest lead of the game of 20.
• A cold spell from the Flyers saw the Revolutionaries get back within 15 until Javon Bennett knocked down a three to increase the lead to 63-45 with nine minutes to play.
• On the very next possession Holmes finished off an impressive layup to put himself over 20 points on the night with 21.
• Brea would then hit a deep three to bring the lead back over to 21 at 68-47 with 7:14 left on the clock.
• Holmes continued his impressive scoring night with a layup and a mid-range jumper to give himself 25 on the night.
• Brea's fifth three of the game on the next possession saw the Flyers jump out to their largest lead of the contest at 75-49 with 4:29 left to play.
• After subbing on late in the second half, Brady Uhl knocked down a mid-range jumper for his first points of the game and later a three.
• Holmes was dominant in the second half recording 16 points and five rebounds. Brea was 3-4 (75%) from three in the second period.
BY THE NUMBERS
• 4-Nate Santos's four assists on the night set a new personal college career high. He and DaRon Holmes II led UD with four assists each.
• 18 - The Flyers had 18 assists from six players on 29 made buckets. In addition to four apiece by Santos and Holmes, Javon Bennett and Enoch Cheeks both had three, and Kobe Elvis and Atticus Schuler each dished two.
• 16- Holmes recorded 16 points in the second half.
• 28- Javon Bennett led the team in +/- at 28.
• 7- Brady Uhl scored a career-high seven points (2-2 FG, 1-1 3-pt., 2-2 FT).
• 10- Tonight was Holmes's 10th game this season scoring at least 20 points. He has 33 in his career. For the game he made 9-of-13 field goals and all seven of his free throws.
