DAYTON -- The University of Dayton football team suffered a 14-6 loss at the hands of the Morehead State Eagles Saturday in front of 2,826 fans at Welcome Stadium in Dayton. The Dayton defense held its fourth straight PFL foe to a league-leading 14 points, but the Morehead defense held UD to under 200 yards for just the second time this season.
Dayton is now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Pioneer Football League, while Morehead State goes to 5-3, and also 3-1 in the PFL.
GAME RECAP
1st Quarter – Dayton 0, Morehead State 0
•   On a run-heavy first drive that lasted nine plays and over six minutes, Dayton was able to push the ball to mid-field.Â
•   UD forced a quick 3-and-out on Morehead's' first drive, and
Paul Kelly got a big 20-yard return for the Flyers, but it was negated by an illegal block in the back penalty.
•   With 2:15 to go in the first, Flyer QB
Drew VanVleet was tackled and fumbled, allowing Morehead to take over at its own 34 yard line.
2nd Quarter – Morehead State 7, Dayton 0
•   Morehead capitalized on the turnover, driving 66 yards on eight plays and scoring a short two-yard touchdown pass from Carter Cravens to Christian Peterson to give the Eagles' a 7-0 lead.
 •   The Flyers' defense came up with a big stop midway through the second quarter, as
Jack Wardzala sacked Cravens to force an Eagles punt and give Dayton a chance to put some points on the board in the second.
•   At intermission,
Mason Hackett led the rushing attack with 53 yards on 14 attempts.
3rd Quarter –Morehead State 14, Dayton 6
•   With Morehead getting the football to start the half, the Flyers defense forced a quick three-and- out and got a couple of solid runs from Hackett to put themselves in good position to score.  However, the ensuing Baker 37-yard field goal attempt was wide and UD remained scoreless.
•   The Flyers got the ball right back on a fumble from by Cravens that was recovered by UD's
Chase Brown at the MSU 16-yard line.
Danny Baker nailed a field goal from 29 yards out to get the Flyers their first points and make it a 7-3 game.
•   Dayton was able to tack on another three points on another 29-yard field goal by Baker, Dayton had now cut the deficit to just one point, 7-6.
•   The Eagles responded quickly on a 88 yard pass from Cravens to Nathan Garnett Jr. to give MSU a 14-6 lead with 3:52 left in the third.
4th Quarter –Morehead State 14, Dayton 6
•   Morehead drove all the way down to the Dayton 14-yard line, but missed a 29 yard attempt to keep the score at 14-6.
•  The Flyers gave the ball right back, as VanVleet's pass to Jak Coleman was batted around before being intercepted by MSU's Richard Sweeney III at the Dayton 30-yard line on the first passing attempt of the drive.
•   Thanks in part to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a sack, Dayton got the ball back with 11:33 to go in the game.
•   The Flyers were able to work the ball into MSU territory, but the drive came to a halt there. An MSU sack followed by a pass break up on fourth down allowed Morehead to get the ball back, still leading 14-6.
•   The Eagles were seemingly one score away from icing this one, a second missed FG attempt of the day gave the Flyers life with 1:53 left.
•  UD could not take advantage of the missed FG, turning the ball over on downs once again. The drive ended on the Eagles' sixth sack of the day.
BY THE NUMBERS
•   The Dayton defense held Morehead State to just nine yards.
•   MSU outgained UD 284 to 91 through the air.  The 91 yards passing were a season low for the Flyers.

Aiden McKinley led Dayton with eight tackles.
•   Right behind him were
Gideon Lampron and
Jack Wardzala with seven. Lampron added 3.0 TFL, a sack and a QB hurry. Â Wardzala 1.5 TFL and a sack.
•   Lampron led in unassisted tackles with five.
•   Ca'Ron Coleman contributed six tackles, with four solo hits.

Mason Hackett carried the ball 21 times for 82 yards to lead UD. Â

Gavin Lochow caught half of Dayton 12 completions for 45 yards. Â He also carried the ball three times for 30 yards.

Logan Forcum punted four times for a 41.5 yard average, with one inside the 20.
•   Flyer coverage teams allowed just 16 yards on three kickoff returns.

Vincent Firenze blocked a punt to give Flyer special teams their eighth blocked kick of the year.
