CHARLESTON, Ill. – The University of Dayton baseball team erased a three-run deficit over its final two at-bats Friday, scoring six runs in the eighth and ninth innings to come back and stun Eastern Illinois in the series opener, 9-6 at Coaches Stadium at Monier Field.
Â
Down a run in the ninth, senior
Carlos Castillo scored on a RBI single from freshman
David Mendez to tie the game. The FlyBoys used their speed to score the go-ahead run, as Mendez and junior
David Pedanou pulled off a double-steal that resulted in an errant throw to bring home Mendez.
Dayton wasn't done, however, as sophomore
Eddie Yamin IV gave the Flyers breathing room with his fourth home run of the season to cap off the inning.
Â
Senior
Nick Wissman pitched the final two innings, striking out a pair and inducing a double play ball to end the contest for his third win of the season.
Â
The offense exploded out of the gate, as UD jumped ahead early thanks to a Mendez two-run homer. Junior
Mason Dobie launched his second of the season in the third to give Dayton a 3-1 lead.
Â
Dobie and Mendez both finished with three hits in the game, while Yamin had two. All three FlyBoys hit home runs.
