DAYTON – The University of Dayton baseball team plated five runs in the first inning to take a lead it would never relinquish to claim a 7-3 win over South Dakota State on Saturday afternoon at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium.
The first five FlyBoys reached base to begin the home half of the first, with UD eventually sending 10 men to the plate in the inning. Freshman David Mendez highlighted the frame with a two-run double and junior David Pedanou turned in a two-RBI single.
Dayton starting pitcher Parker Bard had a strong outing, tossing five innings while only giving up three hits and a run. Senior southpaw Luke Baker pitched three innings in relief, a season-high for the Gainesville, Fla. native.
UD's offense had four players with multi-hit games, with Mendez and Pedanou going 2-for-4 and senior Paxton Tomaini and junior Mason Dobie going 2-for-3. Dobie also tacked on an RBI double.
The Flyers go for the series victory on Sunday at noon.
