Cazorla Carries #FlyBoys to 6-5 Win Over George Mason in Series Opener

Alejandro Cazorla Drove In Five Of UD's Six Runs

DAYTON – Sophomore Alejandro Cazorla's 11th-inning bases-loaded sacrifice fly lifted the University of Dayton baseball team over George Mason, 6-5, in the first game of its Atlantic 10 series on Friday, April 12th at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium.

Sophomore Eddie Yamin IV started the fateful frame with a leadoff double, and after a pair of walks, the stage was set for Cazorla's heroics. The Okotoks, Alberta native lined a ball into right-center for a sacrifice fly to lift the FlyBoys to victory and give them their second walk-off win of the season.

George Mason started the game hot with a two-run first inning, then added two more runs in the fourth inning. The FlyBoys struggled to break through until tallying a four-run fifth. Cazorla smashed a base-clearing double that drove in Paxton Tomaini, Michael Adair and Eddie Yamin IV. The sophomore then came around to score on David Mendez's sacrifice fly to tie the game 4-4.

The Patriots started the tenth inning with a home run but, Cazorla struck back with his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the tenth inning to tie the game back up at 5-5.

Seniors Eli Majick and Nick Wissman proved to be the dynamic duo the pitching needed, with Majick throwing the first 5.1 innings and Wissman finishing the final 5.2. Majick struck out eight batters, tying a high for the 2024 season, while Wissman picked up his Atlantic 10-leading seventh win of the campaign.

Cazorla finished 2-for-3 with a three-run double, a home run, and the game-winning sacrifice fly.

Dayton finished the night with nine hits and seven free passes (six walks, one hit-by-pitch).
