RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team kicked off its crucial Atlantic 10 series at VCU with a 5-1 victory over the Rams on Friday night at The Diamond.
Â
The FlyBoys improve to 25-13 overall on the season and 7-3 in A-10 play while VCU falls to 24-14 overall and 6-4 in the league.
Â
Dayton jumped ahead with a run in the first inning, and after VCU tied it up in the second, the Flyers scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to go back on top. UD added a pair of key insurance runs thanks to a two-out, two-run single by
Paxton Tomaini in the eighth inning.
Â
That proved to be more than enough cushion for the pitching tandem of seniors
Eli Majick and
Nick Wissman. Majick tossed the first six innings and struck out seven en route to his fourth win of the season, while Wissman threw three scoreless frames to pick up his A-10-leading sixth save.
Â
Three Flyers finished the night with two hits, as Tomaini finished 2-for-4 with those two clutch RBI, junior
David Pedanou went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and freshman
David Mendez added a 2-for-4 showing.
Â

33 – consecutive games that freshman
David Mendez has reached base
