TYSONS, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team rallied for four unanswered runs to topple Massachusetts in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament, 4-1, on Tuesday night at Capital One Park.
The FlyBoys advance to take on No. 2 seed VCU on Wednesday, May 22 at 3 p.m.
Â
After freshman
David Mendez drove in the first Dayton run of the game in the sixth with a two-out single, sophomore
Alejandro Cazorla belted a two-out, two-strike blast beyond the left-center field wall to put the Flyers on top, 3-1.
Â
An inning later Mendez came through again, this time tattooing a ball into the Virginia night to push the lead to its final at 4-1.
Â
Both starters locked in a pitcher's duel early, as freshman
Connor Fennell was fantastic for the Flyers. He pitched into the sixth inning, striking out six and allowing just one run on four hits.
Fennell was lifted for senior
Nick Wissman, who proceeded to shut the Minutemen offense down, going 3.1 innings and striking out five without allowing a hit.
