Women’s Basketball Storms To 20-Point Win At VCU

Ivy Wolf And Olivia Leung Had Career Games For The Flyers

RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team earned its first road win of the season with a 69-49 victory at VCU Sunday afternoon.
 
The Flyers (8-6, 2-1 A-10) make it two in a row while the Rams (7-8, 1-2 A-10) drop their second Atlantic 10 game.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
 
1st Quarter: Dayton 12, VCU 10
  • VCU was the first to get on the board in the second minute of the game, but Dayton answered with its first basket on a contested layup by senior Arianna Smith.
  • The Rams pulled out to a 6-2 lead, but a three by senior Ivy Wolf cut the margin to one with just over five minutes to play in the opening quarter.
  • At the media timeout, Dayton trailed 8-5.
  • The Flyers responded and held the Rams without a point for nearly three minutes.
  • Freshman Olivia Leung scored back-to-back baskets including a three to put UD up 10-8 with 2:23 to play.
  • Wolf and Leung had five points each to lead Dayton after 10 minutes.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 29, VCU 16
  • UD and VCU traded baskets over the first couple minutes of the second.
  • Wolf scored the first seven points for the Flyers of the quarter to take a 19-12 lead with 6:38 on the clock. She became the first player in the game to reach double digits.
  • Midway through the second, Dayton led 19-16 while shooting 50 percent compared to VCU's 35 percent.
  • Leung added four more points to her total and gave UD a 24-16 advantage with just over three to go in the half.
  • Dayton capitalized on an 8-0 run while VCU faced another a three-minute drought.
  • Dayton shot 48 percent in the first half and held VCU to 27 percent and scoreless over the final 5:26.
  • Wolf led the way at the break with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Lueng added nine points on 3-of-4 shooting.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 50, VCU 27
  • Dayton extended its lead to 18 to start the second half on a layup and three by Leung.
  • VCU finally ended their drought from the first half with a three at the 6:52 mark, ending an 8:34 stretch without a point.
  • Leung outscored the Rams by herself in the quarter by the media timeout with UD ahead 36-22.
  • Dayton held VCU without a field goal once again for another three-minute stretch.
  • The Flyers got the margin to 20 at 47-27 in the final minute and took back the rebounding advantage 24-22.
4th Quarter: Dayton 69, VCU 49
  • UD got the margin to 16 with continued success from Lueng and Wolf, who both went over the 20-point mark.
  • VCU started to find a rhythm offensively and scored 12 points in the quarter over the first four minutes.
  • At the media timeout, Dayton was 4:40 away from the finish with a 62-41 lead.
  • Wolf made her eighth three of the game with 4:21 to go in the contest.
  • The Flyers' lead was too much for the host Rams.
 
KEY STATS
33 – Ivy Wolf recorded a career-high 33 points on 12-of-15 shooting.
8 – Wolf also tied a career high with eight made threes.
21 – Olivia Leung scored a career-high 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 4-of-6 from three.
53% - Dayton shot 53 percent in the contest compared to 33 percent for VCU.
4 – The Flyers were victorious despite shooting a season-low 4-of-7 from the free throw line.
17 – Dayton had 17 assists on 26 made field goals.
