DAYTON ā The University of Dayton football team returned home to host Butler University Saturday and suffered a heart-breaking 23-17 loss.
The Flyers (5-2, 3-1 PFL) ended their five-game winning streak while the Bulldogs (5-3, 3-1 PFL) tie UD at 3-1 in Pioneer Football League play.
GAME RECAP
1st Quarter ā Dayton 0, Butler 7
- Dayton and Butler both got off to a slow start offensively despite some positive plays by the Flyers.
- Junior running back Luke Hansen highlighted UD's drive with a 54-yard rush up the middle at the 9:58 mark.
- Butler answered and was the first team to score with a 67-yard touchdown pass with 1:49 on the clock.
- In the opening quarter, Butler had 99 yards of total offense while Dayton had a total of 76 yards.
- Butler held possession for 8:53 minutes while Dayton held possession for 4:18 minutes.
2nd Quarter ā Dayton 7, Butler 17
- The Flyers were able to convert on 4th-and-7 on a 15-yard pass from redshirt sophomore quarterback Schondelmyer to junior Gavin Lochow.
- On the very next play, Schondelmyer found Lochow in the back of the end zone for a 20-yard pass resulting in a touchdown at 11:33 to play.
- The Bulldogs answered right back with a 16-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-7 with just over 3:32 left in the half.
- As time expired, Butler made it 17-7 with a 41-yard field goal.
- Butler's total yards were 207 in the first half while Dayton had 154 yards.
3rd Quarter ā Dayton 14, Butler 20
- UD was unable to score on its first drive of the second half and was forced to punt it away.
- On the Flyers' next drive, Lochow rushed the ball for 27 yards to put UD on Butler's side of the field.

- Bulldogs 29-Yard Field Goal made by Ryan Short.
4th Quarter ā Dayton 17, Butler 23
- Penalties hurt the Flyers on their first possession in the fourth quarter, and were forced to punt it away with 12:00.
- Butler was able to move the ball down the field and ate up a lot of valuable clock.
- The Bulldogs' added to their lead with a field goal at the 2:35 mark.
- The Flyers got a 34-Yard field goal made by redshirt sophomore Trevor Henkle with 00:52 on the clock, making it a one-score game.
- UD ran out of time though and suffered its first loss since the season opener.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Luke Hansen led the Flyers with 105 yards rushing on 15 carries, including a 54-yarder.
298 ā Dayton managed 298 yards in the game, its lowest total since the Robert Morris game.
12:09 ā The Flyers had the ball for just 12:07 in the first half while the Bulldogs had it for over 17 minutes.
