Football Suffers Loss To Drake In Home Finale

The Flyers Shutout The Bulldogs In The First Half

DAYTON – The University of Dayton football team hosted Drake University Saturday afternoon in a battle for Pioneer League Football standings, but it was the visitors that came out on top, 14-6.

The Flyers (6-4, 4-3 PFL) just couldn't get enough going offensively while the Bulldogs (7-3, 6-1 PFL) were happy to just earn the road win to maintain their position atop the league standings.

  • Both teams looked to get the running game going early on, but the defenses were prepared with neither team able to move the ball on their opening possessions.
  • The Flyers managed to get a spark on a 42-yard rush by junior Gavin Lochow midway through the first quarter that put them in scoring position, before an interception in the end zone spoiled the opportunity.

  • The Bulldogs quickly added to their lead after a turnover on a 66-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0.
  • Redshirt sophomore Drew VanVleet passed deep to the right for 40 yards to Lochow at the Drake 17 to put UD in good field position.
  • The Flyers had a shot at a field goal, but the kick hit the upright.
3rd Quarter – Dayton 0, Drake 14
  • The third quarter started off slow for both teams once again as the defenses seemed to control the tempo of the game.
  • Dayton was threatening once again, but another interception ended the drive for the Flyers.
  • Junior running back Luke Hansen had a big 25-yard up the middle for UD's second-biggest run play of the game behind Lochow's.

  • Dayton was finally able to get on the board early on in the fourth quarter with a touchdown pass from redshirt sophomore Liam Poronsky to redshirt sophomore Michael Mussari from 23-yards out, but the extra point was no good.
  • Dayton gained 122 total yards with 8:38 minutes of possession in the fourth.
