#FlyBoys Split Doubleheader With Saint Joe's; Score 29 Runs In Win

Dayton's 29-1 Win Is The Most Lopsided Victory In At Least A Decade

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Dayton baseball team split an Atlantic 10 doubleheader against Saint Joseph's on Friday, erupting for a season-high 29 runs in a blowout 29-1 win in game one before falling on a walk-off single in game two, 6-5 at Smithson Field.

GAME ONE
Dayton 29 Saint Joseph's 1
The Flyers' 29 runs mark the fourth time this season that UD has scored 20 or more runs in a game, and is the largest margin of victory in a win in at least a decade. Their 23 hits set a new season-best and is the fifth time the FlyBoys have amassed 20 or more in a game.

Sophomore transfer Adin Zorn went 4-for-5 with a career-high seven RBI in the contest, thanks to a rare feat accomplished in Dayton's 16-run fifth inning. With two on and nobody out, Zorn hit his seventh home run of the season. Later that same inning with two outs, the Aliquippa, Pa. native smashed his first career grand slam to put the exclamation point on the frame.

Not to be outdone, freshman Ty Mainolfi went 3-for-4 at the plate, hit his first career grand slam on the way to driving in a new career-high five runs, and scored six runs in the contest, a best for any Flyer in a single game dating back to at least the 2024 season.

Joining Zorn and Mainolfi in the power surge were Mason Dobie and Alejandro Cazorla, who hit a solo shot and a two-run homer, respectfully. The Flyers got a double from Alejandro Sardinas and triple from Michael DiMartini. Dayton had 23 hits and reached base via walk or hit-by-pitch an additional 12 times.

BY THE NUMBERS
29 – most runs in a game since scoring 32 against UMass in 2023
23 – most hits in a game since having 25 in the same 2023 UMass game
16 – runs scored in the fifth inning by Dayton
7 – RBI for Zorn, setting a new career-high
6 – runs scored by Ty Mainolfi, most in a single game since at least 2004
4 – hits for Michael DiMartini, his second four-hit performance of the season
4 – runs scored by both Martin Howell and Alejandro Sardinas, career-highs for both

GAME TWO
Saint Joseph's 6 Dayton 5
One tough inning proved too much to overcome for Dayton in the nightcap of Friday's double dip, as a five-run third fueled the Hawks' eventual 6-5 victory over the Flyers.

Bobby Stang got Dayton on the board with a lead off home run to start the second inning, and the FlyBoys plated another when Michael DiMartini singled home a run in the fifth.

Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, DiMartini came through with a clutch two-out homer to even the score.

Unfortunately, an error to lead off the ninth inning proved costly. Saint Joseph's sacrificed the runner to second, and after a pitch to the backstop advanced the runner to third, got a game-winning single to left.

ON DECK
The Flyers and Hawks play the rubber match of this Atlantic 10 series on Sunday, April 27 at 12 p.m. at Smithson Field.
