Baseball Completes Sweep Of UMass With Dramatic 9-8 Victory

The FlyBoys Trailed 6-0 Early And Scored The Go-Ahead Run In The Ninth

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Dayton baseball team rallied from behind early and won in dramatic fashion to complete its first sweep of the season, turning aside Massachusetts 9-8 on Sunday afternoon from Earl Lorden Field.

The dramatics started in the eighth for the Flyers, as junior Alejandro Cazorla sparked a two-out rally with UD trailing 8-7. Cazorla slapped a pinch hit single through the right side to reach, and after a walk to Bobby Stang, sophomore Adin Zorn came through with an RBI single to centerfield to tie the game at 8-8.

With a drop-dead time fast approaching, sophomore Bennett LaPalm worked a quick 1-2-3 eighth to keep the contest alive for an exciting ninth.

Sophomore Michael DiMartini started a two-out rally by drawing a walk. Freshman phenom Rylan Lujo followed with a double to the right-center field gap that allowed DiMartini to score from first and give Dayton its first lead of the day at 9-8.

The drama did not end there, as the Minutemen got the leadoff man aboard and pushed him into scoring position with a bunt a play later. On a sharp line drive to left field, UMass sent the runner to attempt to tie the score, but a perfect throw from Zorn cut down the runner at the plate. The frame ended with the go-ahead run in scoring position, but LaPalm induced a weak groundout to secure the sweep.

Lujo led four FlyBoys with multi-hit performances, going 3-for-6 at the plate. Stang had a pair of hits including his second home run of the weekend. DiMartini and Dyrenson Wouters both finished with a pair of hits.

LaPalm picked up his sixth win of the 2025 campaign and second win of the weekend by throwing two scoreless frames to end the game. Freshman Ben Dean tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and struck out four.
