DAYTON – The University of Dayton baseball team secured a win in the final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon, topping St. Bonaventure in mercy-rule fashion, 21-11, at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium.
Senior
Mason Dobie smashed a no-doubt, two-run home run in the home half of the seventh inning to give the FlyBoys the "walk-off".
Sophomore
Michael DiMartini re-wrote the record books on Saturday afternoon, setting new single-season marks for hits (93), runs scored (68) and stolen bases (37).
The FlyBoys trailed early Saturday, falling behind 7-3 after just two innings of play, but Dayton responded in a big way in the middle innings.
Trailing 8-3, UD chipped into the deficit with a three-run fourth, thanks in part to RBI base hits from the sophomore duo of
Michael DiMartini and
Adin Zorn. The FlyBoys then batted around in the fifth, sending 12 men to the plate and scoring seven runs on seven hits to give Dayton its first lead of the game.
The sixth inning saw more of the same, as 11 Flyers came to the dish and six scored, with freshman
Ty Mainolfi and sophomore
Martin Howell crushing home runs to highlight the inning. When the dust settled at the end of the sixth, Dayton held a 19-11 advantage.
Dobie launched his career-high eighth home run beyond the right field fence to score
Ryan MacDougall and give the FlyBoys the mercy-rule win.
