DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team returns home to host the University of Richmond Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at UD Arena.Â
SCOUTING THE FLYERSÂ
Dayton is hoping to put back-to-back wins together for the third time season after its big road win at Fordham last outing. The Flyers are 9-7 overall this year and 2-3 in Atlantic 10 play. UD is 5-2 at home this season.
Head coach
Tamika Williams-Jeter is in her fourth season in charge of her hometown Flyers, coming over after a year at Wittenberg. She has assistant coaching stops at Kansas, Kentucky, Penn State, and Ohio State.Â
The Flyers are averaging 65.8 points per game, but giving up 66.6 points to opponents. Dayton is shooting 43.5 percent overall, 29.9 percent from three point range, and 66.3 percent from the free throw line. UD has a +4.7 rebounding margin, but is committing 4.4 more turnovers.Â
Leading the way for the Flyers is senior
Nayo Lear with 16.7 points per game and graduate student
Nicole Stephens with 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. Junior
Fatima Ibrahim is the team's leading rebounder at 6.7 per game to go with 7.9 points each outing.Â
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
RICHMOND
Richmond comes to UD Arena with a three-game winning streak and 14-4 record on the season. The Spiders are 4-1 in league games and hoping to prove their preseason favorite status against the Flyers midweek.
Reigning A-10 Coach of the Year Aaron Roussell is in his seventh year at Richmond and has turned the Spiders into one of the most successful programs in the A-10 over the last four seasons.Â
As a team, Richmond ranks second in the nation in three pointers per game and 26th in three point percentage. The Spiders are scoring 73.7 points per game and holding opposing teams to 63.2 points each contest. Richmond is averaging 45.6 percent from the field, 36.5 percent from three, and 78.6 percent from the charity stripe.Â
Maggie Doogan is not only a conference player of the year candidate yet again, she is an All-American candidate as well with 24.2 points per game, which ranks fourth Division I. She ranks top three in three pointers and field goals as well. Behind her is Rachel Ullstrom with 14.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game and Ally Sweeney with 10.2 points and 3.7 assists each contest.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton went into a tough environment at Fordham and held on for a 66-58 road victory in the Bronx. The Flyers got a career-high 30 points from
Nayo Lear and a double-double from
Fatima Ibrahim.
Richmond won a thrilling triple-overtime contest at home over Davidson on Saturday, 91-84. Maggie Doogan also had a career high with 48 points, eight threes, and 6-for-6 from the free throw line while adding 13 rebounds for a double-double in the effort.
SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and Richmond are meeting for the 35th time in program history with the Flyers holding a narrow 19-15 lead in the series. The Spiders have won the last five showdowns though, including last year's game in Dayton, 83-72.
