PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Dayton women's soccer team erased an early deficit with three unanswered goals to get back in the win column with a 3-1 victory over Duquesne on Thursday night at Rooney Field.
UD (5-6-2, 2-1-2 A10) turned its play up a notch in the second half, scoring a pair of goals to topple previously unbeaten in the Atlantic 10 Duquesne (5-5-3, 2-1-2 A10).
The Dukes got on the board first despite the Flyers dictating the course of play through the first half of action, finding the back of the net in the 14th minute. Dayton struck back just five minutes later when junior
Lauryn Contini floated one past the goal on a pass from
Bre Mendoza to knot the score 1-1.
After the half, UD continued its offensive pressure resulting in a beauty of a goal from the junior duo of
Liv Grenda and
Laney Smith in the 59th minute. Grenda snuck a cheeky heel pass through the defense to the feet of Smith and the Fort Thomas, Ky. native cashed in for her third goal of the season. Contini also registered the secondary assist on the play.
With the lead in hand, the Flyers tacked on another when Smith returned the favor and set Grenda up for an open header in the 77th minute to bring the score to its 3-1 final.
Senior keeper
Kasey Cannistraro finished the match with four saves.
