RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team got out to a hot start in its series with Richmond, defeating the Spiders 10-2.
After Danny MacDougall led off with a single through the right side, Michael Smith Jr. cleared the bases with a home run to left field in the first inning.
The FlyBoys' offense continued in the second with Grayson Carpenter hitting an RBI triple into the corner of right field and allowing Jason Bello to score. Carpenter then made it home on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.
UD tacked on a run in the fourth, with Carpenter scoring a run on a walk for Ryan MacDougall to make the score 5-0.
The sixth inning began much like the first. With Danny MacDougall on first, Smith Jr. hit another home run, this one to right field. Richmond responded in the bottom of the sixth, making it a 7-2 ball game.
With the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, Ryan MacDougall earned an RBI on a hit by pitch. Bobby Stang then singled to center field, allowing Smith Jr. to score. Dyrenson Wouters hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing UD's 10th and final run to score.
