ARLINGTON, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team got out to a hot start in its series with George Washington, taking game one 9-1.
George Washington began the game with a 1-0 lead, but a two-run home run from Colin Lynch gave Dayton a lead that the FlyBoys held onto for the rest of the day.
In the third, Danny MacDougall homered to left center for a 3-1 lead, following it with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Michael Smith Jr. had a solo shot to left center on the first pitch of his at-bat in the sixth, widening the Dayton lead to 5-1.
Bobby Stang joined Smith Jr. in tallying home runs on first pitches, hitting a two-run bomb over the scoreboard in left field in the seventh to extend the Flyers' lead.
With runners on base after being walked or hit by a pitch, Jason Bello walked in a run in the eighth inning. Stang also hit an RBI single to center field for the FlyBoys' ninth run.
Sawyer Jensen pitched his first complete game as a Flyer, allowing five hits and just one run, striking out four batters.
