Russell began his collegiate career on a high note by earning the teams’ Most Improved Runner award. His finishing place on the 2011 Flyer team consistently improved each time he raced the 8K distance. In his first collegiate race, the Flyer 5K, Russell ran a time of 16:29 and continued to improve daily afterwards. By midseason, he improved from the 6th man at the National Catholic Invite (time of 26:15) to 5th man at Pre-Nationals (time of 26:25), and finally as the third man in the A-10 Championship (time of 25:24). Russell’s 5K high school personal best time was 16:10. He then ran the 5K in the A-10 Championships at 15:52 pace and held at tempo to a finishing time of 25:24. This was a 51-second improvement over his season opening 8K. Russell contributed an overall mile pace time of 5:12.2, good for 4th best on the team.
High School
Russell began his running career as a junior at Marquette University High School... His junior year, he ran a leg of the 4x800 team that earned First Team all conference...In his senior year for cross country, he was named First Team all-conference, after finishing as runner-up in the conference meet...He was also named First Team All-Area and First Team All-State coming in 13th overall at the state championships...He helped Marquette finish the year as conference champions, sectional champions, and runners-up by one point at state championships....The team was also ranked nationally for two weeks during the season...Russell was voted the team’s most improved runner...In his senior year of track, Russell was named a team captain...He finished second in conference in the 800-meter run...Was also runner-up at regionals in the 1600-meter run, qualifying for the state meet as an individual, and in the 4x400m team...The 4x400 relay came in 6th overall at state, and Russell placed 20th overall in the 1600...During his two years of running, he made it to all of the four “Top 20 All-Time Lists” at Marquette; 5k (16:10), 800m (1.59.3), 1600m run (4:25.4), and 3200m run (9:46.8)...He also competed in both the Brooks Border Wars race and Footlocker Regionals in his senior year....Off the track, Russell attended service trips to both the Dominican Republic and South Dakota during his junior year, and was a freshman retreat leader his senior year...He completed over 300 hours of community service during his four years in high school...For two weeks in the third quarter of his senior year, he was involved in Senior Shared Life where he went to service at an inner city school.

Son of Patrick and Mary Pat...Has four older siblings: Tim, Jackie, Patrick (played football four years at John Carroll University) and Katie, and a younger brother Sean... Born March 4, 1993...Will study in the College of Arts and Sciences at UD.
