DAYTON, Ohio -
In a meeting of two teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season as champions of their respective conferences, Dayton battled Eastern Kentucky before winning in five games (30-25, 26-30, 32-34, 30-18, 15-10) in non-conference volleyball action Tuesday evening at Frericks Center.
The win was the second straight for Dayton, which improved to 7-9 overall while Eastern Kentucky had its eight-match winning streak snapped and fell to 10-4 overall.
UD won with the balanced attack of a powerful offense that hit .212 as a team and a stingy defense that held EKU to a .163 hitting percentage overall. On the night four Flyers reached double figures in kills while five players had double digit dig performances.
Freshman Kortney Norris paced the Flyer offense her first collegiate 20-kill performance. She hit .277 on the night to go along with a pair of blocks.
Norris was the prime benefactor of another career-night by senior setter Nicole Schott. Schott finished with a career-high 68 assists while also contributing 20 digs, three blocks and four kills. It was the fourth time this season that Schott set a new career high in assists and the ninth consecutive match with at least 45 assists.
Sophomore Adrienne Green led the Flyer defense as she tallied a season-high 25 digs, which was just one shy of her career best set on Sep. 25, 2004 at Pittsburgh.
Her twin sister Robynne Green led all players with a .406 hitting percentage to tally 17 kills. She also finished with a match-high four service aces, six digs and two blocks.
Junior All-America candidate Faye Barhorst matched Green had 17 kills of her own while also recording nine blocks.
The Dayton defense was rounded out by a freshman trio of Erin Schroeder with 16 digs, 14 by Mandy Robbe and 12 from Brittney Scheeringa.
UD returns to Atlantic 10 Conference play this weekend as it hits the road for matches at Fordham (Fri, 7 p.m.) and Rhode Island (Sun., 1 p.m.).
