DAYTON TOPPLES CENTRAL STATE IN EXHIBITION OPENER

DAYTON, Ohio - Senior forward Jennifer Strong scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Dayton Flyers to a 71-41 victory against the Central State Marauders in exhibition action. Freshman guard Kendel Ross added 15 points, all in the second half, and junior guard Brittany Holterman scored 12 points and picked up six rebounds Friday at UD Arena.

They Flyers bench came up big in this contest. Sophomore Marie Rosche led the Flyers with 10 rebounds and added eight points on three-of-four shooting from the floor. Ross and Holterman also came off the bench as Dayton received 42 of its 71 points from non-starters.

For Central State, forward Latisha Walker tallied a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Taya Kidd added 14 points and six steals, while forward Natasha Galloway picked up eight rebounds coming off the bench.

In the first half, Dayton rallied from a slow start after CSU scored the first five points of the game thanks to a three-point bucket by Kidd and a jumper by freshman guard Ijeoma Ofomata. Strong got the Flyers going after hitting a three-point shot at 18:01 in the game. A minute later Strong broke away with a lay-up to even the score 5-5. With a shot by senior center Amber Peterink UD took the lead at 16:48 in the first half. The Marauders answered back with a jumper by Ofomata good for two.

Junior guard Kiki Lund helped the Flyers regain lead with a basket, while junior guard Ashley Armstrong connected on a lay-up at 10:13 giving UD a 10-point lead, forcing the Marauders to call a timeout. Armstrong's lay-up sparked a 22-10 run for Dayton who finished the half with a 20 point lead, 40-20.

In the second half, Ross proved she could play at the collegiate level as she scored 15 points. UD kept the lead above 20 for a majority of the second half. The closest Central State came to cutting the UD lead was 58-41 with 4:31 remaining in the second half. The Flyers finished the game on a 13-0 run to secure the victory.

The Flyers shot 46 percent from the floor and 31 percent from the three-point range. On the defensive end, the Flyers held Central State to 25 percent shooting from the floor and forced 25 turnovers. Strong and Ross each recorded three steals a piece. Kelly Keil chipped in off the bench with a game-high six blocks and seven rebounds.

The Flyers take on the Ohio Legends in their final exhibition game of the season Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. ET. Dayton opens the regular season on the road against Louisville, Winthrop, and Memphis at the Cardinal Classic, Nov. 10 -12. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
