DAYTON, Ohio - A pair of goals from Frank Patano including a tally just 72 seconds into the contest led visiting Butler past Dayton, 2-0 in non-conference men's soccer action at Baujan Field Thursday evening. The loss drops the Flyers to (0-3-0). Dayton will look for their first win of the 2006 campaign Monday when they play host to Belmont at 5:30 p.m. ET.
The physical game featured a total of 26 fouls and five yellow cards. Dayton applied offensive pressure throughout to produce 12 shots and six corner kicks, but was kept off the board for the third time in as many matches this season.
Butler opened the scoring just 1:12 into the game as a BU defender cleared the ball from his defensive half. One player from each team went up to play the ball and it got past them and onto the foot of Butler's Patano. The Bulldog forward dribbled past one defender and beat the keeper low for a 1-0 lead.
UD nearly tied the score with 12:26 left in the first half as Caleb Lindemann ended up with the ball on a brake away. He rifled a shot on goal but it was eaten up by the chest of the Bulldog goalkeeper for a 1-0 Butler lead at halftime.
In the second half, a yellow card issued to a Flyer defender led to a free kick for the Bulldogs 35 yards outside the box in front of the UD bench. The kick from the foot of Matt Soldato entered the box and was redirected on Patano's header to the back of the goal for a 2-0 Butler advantage.
Dayton had a chance to get on the board in the second half when freshman Patrick Polito served a cross into the box with 12:22 left to the head of Aaron Swanson. The Butler goalkeeper made a sliding save with his legs to deny the Flyer scoring effort and preserve the shutout, 2-0 in favor of Butler.
