FLYERS FALL TO NO. 20/21 OHIO STATE IN BUCKEYE CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Dayton women's basketball (4-3) team fell 76-61 to the nationally-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Buckeye Classic.

Kristin Daugherty led UD in scoring with 18 points, while Buckeye Classic All-Tournament selection Justine Raterman finished with 16. Both Daugherty and Raterman finished with eight rebounds apiece.

Patrice Lalor chipped in with seven points and dished out a game-high four assists. Casey Nance and Kendel Ross each had seven points for the Flyers.

The Buckeye's (6-1) Jantel Lavender had a double-double with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds, helping her was fellow teammate Samantha Prahalis who finished the contest with 17 points.

OSU forced 16 Dayton turnovers and finished 20-of-23 from the line (87 percent). Dayton shot 24-of-62 for the game and held an advantage in rebounds, 42-39.

Daugherty opened up the scoring with a shot beyond the arc nearly a minute into the first half. From that point on, both teams traded baskets and the lead the entire frame.

Dayton would lead by two after a trey from Raterman at 13:27 (15-13), but Jantel Lavender had an answer to everything Dayton served up with a shot under the basket to knot the score 15-15.

The Buckeyes took their biggest gain of the half behind Samantha Prahalis, who found the net on a shot from downtown to inch the score 22-19 with 10:50 left to play.

Consecutive trey's from Daugherty and Raterman would give Dayton a 25-22 advantage, but Lavender kept up her hot-shooting ways with another bucket under the basket as OSU trailed by only one point with 7:29 remaining.

After an impressive under the basket move, Raterman would put up two more points for UD moving the score 28-26 in UD's favor.

The two teams would continue to go back-and-forth as the score was an even 34-34 at the break.

Dayton held a commanding edge in rebounds (27-18) and second-chance points (12-5) at the end of the half; however Ohio State out-shot the Flyers 41 to 26 percent from the field.

In the second half, Daugherty and Raterman put up two baskets right out of the gate.

UD would get their biggest lead of the game of 10 points (49-39) with help from Nance, Raterman, and Ross with 12:40 left to play.

Ohio State would close the gap, 50-48, behind Prahalis who scored six points in nearly a minute. After two free-throws from Lavender, the Buckeyes would tie up the score, 50-50, for the first time in the half at 9:44.

OSU turned up the pressure and took their biggest lead of the half, 62-54, with a 6-0 run.

UD's Patrice Lalor cut the margin with a three at the four minute mark and Daugherty would get in four more points for the Flyers, but Lavender closed out the game for OSU as the team scored 10 points in the final stretch to win, 76-61.
