FAIRBORN, Ohio - Senior Marie Rosche hit a career-high 19 points and set a new school record for field goal accuracy in a single game as she helped propel the University of Dayton Flyer women's basketball team over the Wright State Raiders 59-56 at the Ervin J. Nutter Center in a Sunday matinee.
Rosche set a new record for field goal accuracy going a perfect 8-of-8 from the field. The previous record of 6-for-6 was last reached 17 years ago by Lisa Green against Detroit. In addition to a school record, Rosche also posted a career-best 19 points against the Raiders.
Kristin Daugherty also chimed in with double-digits on Sunday with 11 points as the Flyers went 47 percent in field goal range. UD held Wright State to 38 percent from field goal range and out-rebounded the Raiders 40-26. Daugherty and Justine Raterman both grabbed eight boards in the contest.
The Flyers came out firing quickly on a bucket by Daugherty after controlling the tip. Quick shots from Raterman and Daugherty put UD ahead 7-3 in the opening five minutes of play.
Out of the first media timeout Rosche nailed a wide open jumper to extend Dayton's lead 9-3. Wright State's LaShawna Thomas responded with two points from the field. However, De'Sarae Chambers answered quickly with a three-point play after drawing the hoop and the hack at 14:49 left in the first half for a 12-5 Flyer lead.
The Flyers pushed the tempo mid-way through the half with a tough layup inside by Rosche from Kendel Ross. Rosche hit another open look to extend UD's lead 18-10. WSU's Kanisha Ward responded with a long range trey, but freshman Kayla Moses kept the Flyers in the driver's seat with another mid-range jumper to make the score 20-10.
Wright State responded with an 8-2 run after a three-pointer from Ward. LaShawna Thomas added another two points pulling the Raiders within two points, 22-20 with just under six minutes left in the half.
The Flyers extended their lead to seven after a pair of buckets from Daugherty and Rosche. With just over a minute left in the half, Rosche hit a pair of shots from the charity stripe to give UD a 31-22 edge. However, WSU's Thomas hit an outside shot in the closing seconds of the half to keep the Raiders close heading into the half 31-25.
The Flyers shot out to an early 14 point lead in the second half, but Wright State worked its way back into the game pulling within four of UD, 48-44. Two separate trips to the charity stripe kept the Raiders close 50-47 with just over 6 minutes left in the second half.
Wright State pulled ahead for brief moments, however, Daugherty's tenacious work driving the ball inside helped the Flyers to a 54-51 lead with 4 minutes left in the second stanza.
With a minute left in the game, Patrice Lalor hit a pair of key free throws to keep Dayton in the lead 59-56. Forced to play lock down defense on the closing possession, the Flyers fended the Raiders off to close out the game after an errant three point shot at the buzzer by Wright State's Shey Peddy.
