DAYTON, Ohio -
The University of Dayton women's basketball team will host Rhode Island on "Think Pink" Sunday at 2 p.m. ET in a game that can be followed with live audio (WHIO Radio), Gametracker, and video streaming at www.DaytonFlyers.com.
The Flyers will be joining the Women's Basketball Coaches Association in its efforts to raise cancer awareness at Sunday's game. The coaches and staff for both teams will "Think Pink" this weekend by wearing pink ribbons at the game as a part of a national effort organized by the WBCA. For more information about this cause visit the WBCA web page at www.wbca.org.
The University of Dayton Division of Athletics will also host the 11th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day prior to tipoff. Fans have the opportunity to meet their favorite female Flyer student-athletes prior to the game, while taking part in interactive stations setup around the arena concourse. The festivities begin at noon.
The Dayton women's basketball team (20-5, 6-3) is coming off one of the biggest wins of head coach Jim Jabir's era with a 44-43 victory over rival Xavier to start its three-game homestand on Feb. 14. Three Flyers reached double figures in scoring as UD beat XU for the first time in 10 tries.
With the win, UD secured its first 20-win season in program history since upgrading to Division I. The Flyers last 20-win campaign was in the 1983-84 season as a Division II team. They also reached the NCAA Semifinals that year.
UD is fifth in the conference standings, but has defeated two of the top four teams in the league. Dayton also beat second place Temple, 62-49, on Jan. 12.
Freshman Kristin Daugherty scored all of her team-high 13 points in the second half also pulling down seven boards in the win. Seniors Brittany Holterman and Karah Cloxton tallied 10 points each for a Dayton squad that out shot Xavier by a margin of 36 percent to 28 percent from the field.
Rhode Island enters this weekend's match with an 11-13 record and a 4-5 mark in Atlantic 10 Conference play following a 68-38 loss at Richmond on Wednesday evening. URI has lost three of its last five games and has been held to 50 points or fewer six times this season.
Senior guard Safi Mojidi is the Rams' leader in scoring at 13.7 points per game while shooting a team-best 41.8 percent from three-point range. She has led the team in scoring during seven of the last eight contests while also ranking second on the team with 61 overall assists.
The Flyers will wrap up a three-game homestand on Wednesday against Richmond. UD and UR will tipoff at 7 p.m. ET on Girl Scout Night in a pivotal Atlantic 10 Conference contest.
