DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton women's basketball team continues Atlantic 10 play this weekend with a road trip to Charlotte. The Flyers will face the 49ers on Saturday (2 p.m. ET) in a game that can be followed with live stats at www.DaytonFlyers.com.
The Flyers face a daunting task as they take on a 49ers squad that boasts an impressive winning record at home. Charlotte has won 41 of its last 53 games at Halton Arena and is coming off a 66-56 win over Saint Louis on Jan. 20.
Dayton enters Saturday's contest 13-6 and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Flyers held off Duquesne's late game comeback to prevail in a 77-75 victory Wednesday night at UD Arena.
UD had five players reach double digits in scoring including Casey Nance who netted a career- high 16 points. Six-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Justine Raterman led all scorers with 17 points.
Kendel Ross scored 13 in the game, including sinking 6-of-8 shots from the line. Ross played an important role in the team offense, dishing out six assists, a career best. Kristin Daugherty tallied 11 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the field and Kayla Moses added 10 in the victory.
Double-figure scoring is nothing new for UD; eight Flyers have had double-figure scoring games this season, three of which have tallied double-doubles. Ross and Raterman lead UD with five double-doubles apiece on the season. Of the eight players who have had double-figure games, five are freshmen.
SCOUTING CHARLOTTE
Charlotte improved to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10 after defeating Saint Louis 66-56 on Jan. 20. The 49ers lead the A-10 in assists with an average of 17.7 assists per game and are fourth in scoring margin, out-scoring opponents by an average of 6.8 points per game.
The 49ers have four players averaging double figure scoring including Aysha Jones (13.2 ppg), Shannon McCallum (11.8 ppg), Erin Floyd (11.4 ppg), and Danielle Burgin (10.8 ppg).
Burgin, who netted her 1,000th career point against Saint Louis, has scored double figures in five-straight games and was named this week's Atlantic 10 Player of the Week.
Charlotte is coached by Karen Aston who is in her second season at the helm of the 49ers. Aston holds a 30-20 record.
SERIES STUFF
Saturday marks just the fifth meeting between the two schools. Charlotte leads the all-time series 3-1, but earned its first loss to Dayton last season in the Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinals. The Flyers defeated the 49ers 77-53 on Mar. 8, 2008 to make it the semifinals of the conference championship.
