CHARLOTTE, North Carolina - Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Justine Raterman scored 19 points as the University of Dayton women's basketball team flew past the Saint Louis Billikens, 74-52, at Halton Arena Friday afternoon in the first round of the 2009 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship. The Flyers will face the No. 1 seeded and nationally-ranked Xavier Musketeers in the quarterfinal round.
It will be Dayton's seventh appearance in the A-10 quarterfinals. The No. 9 seeded Flyers and the No. 1 seeded Musketeers will compete Saturday, March 7 at noon ET for the third time this season. Raterman led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor, including a solid 6-of-7 from the line. Junior Kendel Ross and freshman Kayla Moses tallied 12 apiece. Ross and freshmen De'Sarae Chambers both grabbed a game-high eight boards.
A-10 All-Rookie team selection Casey Nance finished with four blocks, while fellow classmate Patrice Lalor dished out a game-high four assists.
As a team, the Flyers out-rebounded the Billikens 42-35. Dayton held an edge in almost all categories including assists (15-11), blocks (7-1), and shooting (48-32 percent)
The Dayton defense held the league's leading scorer, Theresa Lisch, to just eight points for the game. Lisch normally averages 19.6 ppg.
Daugherty hit back-to-back buckets for an early 4-0 lead, but Saint Louis edged its way in scoring the next six points.
UD would have a slim advantage by three at the first media timeout, but would extend its lead from there and pull out on a 16-0 run. The Flyers led by as many as 24 points in the first half behind strong shooting from the field (17-of-28, 60 percent). Twelve of those points came from freshman Justine Raterman and seven from Kendel Ross.
Saint Louis, who was held scoreless for nearly eight minutes in the half, got a few shots up before the end of the break, but trailed 39-20 into the half.
The Billikens went on a 7-0 run in the first part of the second half to climb within 15 points (46-31) with 13:03 on the clock. However, UD would respond with a 7-0 run of its own. It's as close as Saint Louis would get as the Flyers kept up the momentum winning, 74-52.
