DAYTON WINS MINNESOTA SUBWAY CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP

Boxscore

MINNEAPOLIS – Five different Flyers scored in double figures as the University of Dayton women’s basketball team claimed the 2010 Minnesota Subway Classic with a convincing 97-81 over the Golden Gophers Sunday at Williams Arena.

Junior Patrice Lalor scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Flyers, and she was named to the all-tournament team. Fellow junior Justine Raterman was named MVP of the Classic after averaging 18.5 ppg and 6.0 rpg. She had 21 against Minnesota. Senior Kristin Daugherty had 15, redshirt sophomore Brittany Wilson added 11 points and eight rebounds, and sophomore Kari Daugherty chipped in 10 points.

The Flyers ended UM’s streak of winning its own tournament for three consecutive seasons.  It’s the second tournament hosted by a Big Ten team that the Flyers have won in the past two seasons. UD also claimed Purdue’s BTI Classic last year.

The Flyers rolled in the first half, putting up a season-best 54 points in a single half and a 54-33 lead. UD shot 47 percent from the floor and also knocked down 14-of-17 free throws to UM’s five (5-of-10).

Junior Casey Nance won the tip and Lalor connected with Kristin Daugherty under the basket. She was fouled and converted both free throws to get Dayton on the board first nine seconds into the game. UD never relinquished the lead.

Dayton led by as much as 26 when they were up 68-42 with 15:27 to play in the game.

The Flyers outrebounded Minnesota 49-34 and were paced by Nance’s game-high 10 boards. Dayton shot 49 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from three-point range (13-of-26).

Nance earned her first start of the season and Kari Daugherty got the first start of her career. It marks the first time sisters Kristin and Kari Daugherty started the same game in a Flyer uniform.

The Flyers face the UIC Flames at UD Arena on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. The Flyers are 5-0 all-time against the Flames. The following Monday, Dayton plays at Wright State on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Nutter Center.
