DAYTON, Ohio- The University of Dayton’s womens tennis team had a great performance at the Ball State Invitational this weekend.
Leading the way for the Flyers was sophomore
Julie Kirkland. Kirkland went undefeated in the invitational. In Flight A Doubles, she, alongside
Claire Dreyer, defeated Peresetsky and Nini of WSU, 8-0. The duo also came out on top against McLoughlin and Rubenstein of Butler University, 9-7. While playing in Flight A Singles, Dreyer suffered a muscle cramp. She defaulted to Hendrik of BU, 2-6, 4-2. Following Dreyer’s loss, Kirkland would defeat Hendrik, 6-4, 6-2. . “Both Julie and Claire played great,” Coach Mahone remarked. “It’s a shame that Claire was injured during Flight A Singles because it looked like the two of them would have competed against one another. But, it was great to see everyone out there having fun and doing well.”
Also, playing well for the Flyers was
Loni Dickerhoof. Dickerhoof defeated BSU’s Sanders in Flight A Back Draw, 1-6, 6-3, (11-9). Following that win, Dickerhoof came out on top against Abello from ISU, 6-4, 2-6, (10-7). In Flight A Back Doubles, Dickerhoof along with
Claire McNulty defeated Sanders and Hebble from BSU, 8-5.
In Flight C Doubles, Sarah Van Wallengham and
Erin Filbrandt defeated Steingass and Clarf of WSU, 9-7. The pair would later fall short to BSU’s Hall and Rodriguez, 8-4. Filbrandt later fell short to BU’s Thompson in Flight C Singles main draw, 5-7, 6-2, (10-5).
Rounding out the Flyer’s success was Kelly O’Connell who defeated Steingass of WSU in Flight D Singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Coach Mahone was undoubtedly impressed with the ladies’ performance. “I am very impressed with everyone’s effort and excited to play Notre Dame. It will be a lot of fun to compete there.”
The Flyers will travel to the Notre Dame Invitational taking place Oct.1-3.
