KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Dayton volleyball team fell to Rhode Island in five sets, 3-2 (25-14, 22-25, 25-27, 25-12, 17-19), Saturday night at URI's Keaney Gym. Senior
Shayne Brown led the Flyers with a career-high 19 kills and a career-high 13 digs for her first career double-double.
Also for the Flyers, sophomore Jill Loiars tallied a career-high 17 kills on the night while senior Megan Campbell added 14 kills to go with a career-high eight digs and eight blocks. Sophomore Jenna Jendryk set a career-high 56 assists.
Rhode Island improves to an even 10-10 on the season and 3-2 in Atlantic 10 action while Dayton moves to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Flyers and Rams were even in the kills column with 64 each but UD was once again strong at the net with 14.5 team blocks to URI's 5.0.
A Campbell kill capped a 7-1 run for the Flyers to open the first set and the lead was nine, 13-4, following a service ace from sophomore Angel Agu. Dayton lead by as many as 11 late in the game as a kill from sophomore Loiars set the score at 23-12. Jendryk earned the Flyers set-point at 24-14 and Jendryk partnered with junior Isolde Hannan for a double-block to take the set and the 1-0 match advantage.
The second set started with a 4-2 run by Rhode Island and the Rams led by as many as three, 7-4, before Dayton rallied to even the set at eight on a kill from Brown. Senior Allyson Morey capped a 4-0 Flyer run with a service ace to give UD the 11-8 lead and Dayton would go up four, 16-12, after a Loiars kill. The Rams rallied late with a 5-0 run to retake the lead at 23-21. Rhody would hold on for the 25-22 win in the second set to even the match at 1-1 before intermission.
The third set was tied at 5-5 following a bad set by the Rams and an assisted block from Agu and Loiars gave the Flyers the slim one-point lead. Brown and Hannan combined for a block to increase the UD lead to three, 11-8. Back-to-back kills from Brown set the score at 16-11 in favor of the Flyers and the Rams called for timeout.
A URI service error followed by a Campbell kill increased the UD lead to six, 21-15, and the Flyers held set-point at 24-20. Rhode Island rallied late, closing out the third game with a 7-1 run to claim the 27-25 win. After three sets, the Rams were in the lead, 2-1.
Dayton got back on track in the fourth set, going up 4-1 in the early going of the frame. The Flyer lead was 8-3 following a kill from Jendryk and Loiars pushed the UD advantage to six, 9-3, with a strong swing from the left side. Dayton was able to open an eight-point lead, 17-9, on the strength of a 4-0 run capped by a Morey service ace. The Flyers didn't look back, reaching set-point on a Campbell service ace and took the 25-12 fourth-frame win on a kill from Brown to even the match, 2-2.
The deciding fifth set was hotly contested with five ties before either team reached six points. The Rams were up two, 8-6, when the teams switched benches and held the 10-7 advantage until a URI service ace gave UD sideout. Dayton called for timeout trailing 12-9 but a Rhode Island blocking error pulled the Flyers to within one at 12-11.
Facing match point, UD evened the set at 14-14 with a kill from Loiars and a Campbell-Hannan double-block. With three consecutive kills, the Rams were able to close out the fifth set in extra points, taking the 19-17 set victory to win the match, 3-2.
Rhode Island was led by Layne Self with 18 kills and Franki Darnold with a 17-kill, 12-dig double-double.
The Flyers return home for back-to-back Atlantic 10 matches against Fordham and Rhode Island next weekend. First serve against the Fordham Rams is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 at Frericks Center.
