Campbell Leads Flyers with 12 Kills, Hannan with Eight Blocks

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team downed the visiting Rhode Island Rams in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-21), Sunday afternoon at UD's Frericks Center. With the win, the Flyers improve to an even 10-10 on the season and 4-4 in Atlantic 10 play while Rhode Island falls to 10-12 overall and 3-4 in league action. Senior Megan Campbell led UD with 12 kills to go with five blocks while junior Isolde Hannan tallied a match-high eight blocks for the Flyers.

Also for Dayton, senior Shayne Brown and sophomore Jill Loiars each added eight kills while sophomore Jenna Jendryk set 27 assists. Sophomore Janna Krafka passed a match-high 15 digs while senior Allyson Morey got under 10 digs.

Dayton out-hit Rhode Island, .254 to .126 and the Flyers posted 13.5 team blocks to the Rams' four.

Brown's service ace gave the Flyers an early 5-3 lead in the first set but the Rams held the two-point advantage at 12-10. URI pushed its lead to three, 15-12, and UD called for timeout. Out of the break, back-to-back kills from Campbell and sophomore Jill Loiars pulled Dayton to within one, 15-14, and UD was down one again at 17-16.

Hannan kills twice tied the set for Dayton at 18-18 and again at 19-all before Jendryk's kill gave UD the 20-19 advantage. A double-block from Hannan and sophomore Ange Agu followed up by a Ram ball-handling error pushed the Dayton lead to three, 22-19. Rhody battled back to even the frame at 23 apiece but UD earned set point on a Ram attacking error. Brown, Campbell and Jendryk combined at the net for the block to give Dayton the first-set win, 25-23.

The Rams and Flyers were tied at 3-3 in the second set before UD rattled off three-straight points to go up 6-3. The Dayton advantage was five, 10-5, after a kill from Brown and a 3-0 Flyer run set the score at 15-8 in favor of UD. Back-to-back Rhody kills from Franki Darnold cut into the UD lead, 16-12, and URI would pull within three twice late in the game.

Trailing 21-16, Rhode Island called for its second timeout of the set but after the break Brown was in on the Flyers next two points before Campbell set up game-point at 24-16 with a her kill. URI was able to stay alive, saving set-point twice, but Agu scored the frame-winner to earn UD the 25-18 win for the 2-0 match advantage.

Dayton opened the third set with a 3-1 and the lead was two again, 6-4, after a kill from Jendryk. The Flyers were able to go up three points on the Rams a few times, including at 12-9 on a kill from Brown. The score was tied at 15-15 but a Ram attack error earned the Flyers sideout and the advantage. After a 4-0 burst, UD led 19-15 and URI called for timeout.

The Flyers let the Rams back into the game as URI used a 4-1 run to set the score at 20-19. Earning back the serve at 21-19, Dayton scored again on a Rhode Island attack error for the three-point lead. UD reached match-point on a kill from Loiars and she also scored the set-winner with a kill as well. UD took the 25-21 third-set win and the match, 3-0.

The Rams were led by Darnold with a match-high 14 kills and 11 digs for the match's only double-double. Lena Vedder also had double-digit kills with 11 while Britta Baarstad was URI's leading passer at 12 digs.

UD returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 26 with a 7 p.m. match-up at Duquesne. It is the Flyers' only match of the week.
