- The University of Dayton Flyers, ranked 25th in the last Associated Press men's basketball poll, defeated the Delaware State Hornets 56-46 at home Wednesday. Dayton is now 7-1 on the season. Senior center Matt Kavanaugh led the Flyers, scoring a team-high and season-high 11 points.

It was a balanced scoring effort from UD, as senior guard Vee Sanford finished the day with 10 points and a team-high four assists. Redshirt junior guard Jordan Sibert and sophomore forward Jalen Robinson added eight points each, and sophomore center Devon Scott finished with seven points. Senior forward Devin Oliver added a team-high eight rebounds.

It was a particularly strong day from the UD bench, as they contributed 31 of Dayton's points. In the last two games, the Flyers' second wave has outscored its opponents 83-12.

Dayton also dominated down low, finishing with 36 points in the paint. Flyer big men – Kavanaugh (4-for-4), Robinson (3-for-3) and Scott (2-for-2) – were perfect from the field.

As a team, UD ended the game shooting 45 percent from the field and 52 percent from the free throw line. They also did not yield a steal all game, and made 14 assists against seven turnovers.

It was a low scoring first half for both teams, as the halftime score stood at 28-21. Coming out of the half, Sibert hit the team's first three-point shot of the game extending Dayton's lead to 10. UD would eventually take a 20-point lead (50-30 with 7:49 to go), following an 11-0 run midway through the half.

Immediately after the run, the Hornets would strike back with a 13-2 run of their own to cut the lead to nine, 52-43 with 3:28 remaining. Even though Dayton shot just 52% (14 of 27) from the line for the game, Kavanaugh and Sanford would put the double-digit win away by combining to make four straight free throws.

For Delaware State, they were led by the two-pronged attack of senior forward Casey Walker and junior forward Tyshawn Bell, who both finished with 14 points.

Dayton, who just played its first home game since Nov. 16, now hits the road once again for a trip to Normal, Ill. to take on the Illinois State Redbirds. Tip is set for Saturday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. The game will be available on Comcast Chicago, in Ohio on Time Warner Cable Sports, and nationally on ESPN3.com.
