DAYTON INVITATIONAL KICKS OFF 2013 VOLLEYBALL SEASON

Flyers to Host Missouri State, Northeastern and Tulsa Aug. 30-31

DAYTON, Ohio
- The University of Dayton volleyball team is set to kick off the 2013 season this weekend with the Dayton Invitational at Frericks Center. The Flyers will host Tulsa Friday evening at 7 p.m. and will square off against Northeastern and Missouri State on Saturday. Friday's match against the Golden Hurrican will be a WHITE OUT in comjuction with the women's soccer match - 600 rally towels will be handed out!

DAYTON VOLLEYBALL OPENS 2013 AS HOST OF DAYTON INVITATIONAL
The 22nd-ranked University of Dayton women's volleyball team will open the 2013 season at home playing host to Missouri State, Northeastern and Tulsa for the Dayton Invitational Aug. 30-31. The Flyers will start off the tournament with a 7 p.m. match-up against Tulsa Friday night in Frericks Center. Saturday's schedule includes a 12:30 p.m. tilt against Northeastern in the morning session followed by an 8 p.m. nightcap against Missouri State.

FLYERS IN THE AVCA RANKINGS
For the fifth consecutive season the Flyers earned a national ranking, coming in at No. 22 in the 2013 Preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Poll. Dayton reached as high as No. 10 in 2012, which was the highest in the program's history. The previous high ranking came when UD was ranked No. 12 during the week of Oct. 15, 2007 and Nov. 22, 2010. This is the 62nd consecutive week the Flyers have either been ranked or received votes in the AVCA poll. UD's streak of receiving votes dates back to Nov. 23, 2009.

ABOUT THE FIELD
The Dayton Invitational is the season-opening tournament for all four teams participating this weekend. Missouri State is coming off a 16-15 season and finished sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference a year ago. Northeastern posted a 20-win season in 2012, recording a 20-7 mark for the year and made it to the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association postseason tournament. Tulsa's 14-2 record in league action was good enough for a first-place finish in Conference USA. The Golden Hurricane tallied 26 wins to 10 losses in 2012.

UD PICKED TO WIN THE A-10 CROWN
The defending Atlantic 10 conference volleyball champion Flyers have been unanimously selected as the 2013 Atlantic 10 preseason favorite in a vote conducted among the league's nine head coaches. The Flyers (27-5, 14-0 Atlantic 10) won both the 2012 regular season and the A-10 Championship, their fourth-straight title and fifth in the last six years. The Flyers garnered all nine first-place votes for a point total of 81 in the poll. This was the fourth consecutive year Dayton was picked to finish first in the conference's preseason poll.

CAMPBELL FINALIST FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD
Two-time All-American senior Megan Campbell has been named to the list of 30 finalists for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

PROGRAM ON THE RISE
Dayton currently ranks No. 10 in all-time career wins with 980, passing Illinois State and Texas-Arlington during the 2012 season. The Flyers are just 20 wins shy of the 1,000 win mark, which only nine other schools have accomplished in their history. Dayton's program started in 1970.
