DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team opened the 2013 in winning fashion, picking up the 3-1 (25-23, 26-24, 21-25, 25-21) victory over Tulsa in its first game of the 2013 Dayton Invitational at Frericks Center. Senior Megan Campbell led the Flyer charge with 15 kills and seven blocks on the night.

Sophomore Alaina Turner narrowly missed the double-double with nine kills and a career-high 11 digs and freshman Aubreigh Applegate tallied 11 digs in her collegiate debut.

Dayton (1-0) recorded 14.5 total team blocks to Tulsa's (0-1) 7.0 while the service aces were even at six apiece.

The first set started out slow with neither team able to get ahead by more than a few points until Dayton put together a 5-1 run to take the 17-14 lead. The Flyers were able to stretch their lead to four a few times before earning set point, 24-22, on a Golden Hurricane service error. UD picked up the 25-23 set-one win on a Tulsa attack error.

Set two went to an extra point as again both teams kept the game close. Trailing 11-9, Dayton used a 4-0 run to take over the lead at 13-11. Tulsa answered with its own 5-0 run to retake the advantage, 16-13. A Jendryk kill knotted the two squads at 20 apiece and the two teams would trade points to 24-24. Campbell set up game-point with a kill and a Tulsa attacking error sealed the set for Dayton, 26-24.

Leading by two, 12-10, the Golden Hurricane stretched its lead to 18-12 after a Flyer attack error and UD called for a timeout. Dayton would pull to within three a few times but Tulsa would not relinquish its lead. Erica Bohannon's kill sealed the third-set win, 25-21, for the Golden Hurricane to force the fourth set.

Sophomore Jill Loiars' monstrous five-block fourth set propelled the Flyers to the 25-21 match-winning fourth-set while Campbell and senior Shayne Brown also contributed with three kills apiece in the final frame. In the hole 7-2, the Flyers rallied to overtake the lead at 8-7 behind three Golden Hurricane attack errors and an awesome serving performance from Turner. At 10-10 it was Jendryk's turn to serve up success for her team and helped give UD the 15-10 advantage.

Tulsa would get as close as 18-17 in the final set but Dayton would not go down without a fight. A 4-1 run from the Flyers put the set out of reach at 22-18 and held on for the 25-21 win to take the match, 3-1.

Valerie El Houssine led the Golden Hurricane with 15 kills and a match-high 21 digs while Kellie Culbertson also tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs.
