DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 22-25, 22-25) decision to Western Kentucky University in its opening match of the 2013 Flyer Classic Friday night at Frericks Center. Sophomore
Alaina Turner led the team with 14 kills while three Flyers tallied six blocks apiece.
Also for the Flyers, senior Megan Campbell recorded 10 kills and six blocks while sophomore Janna Krafka passed 14 digs. Sophomore Jenna Jendryk set 32 assists and tallied six blocks as well.
Dayton moves to 4-6 on the season while Western Kentucky improves to 8-4 overall. The Lady Toppers out-hit the Flyers, .233 to .162 and recorded 54 kills to UD's 41.
The Flyers opened the first set with a 5-0 run to take the quick lead on the Lady Toppers but WKU rallied and evened the score at six apiece. The Western Kentucky lead was 17-15 when Dayton called for timeout and a kill from Campbell cut the WKU advantage to one, 18-17. The Lady Toppers rattled off four straight points before a kill from Turner earned the Flyers sideout. After holding set-point at 24-18, the Lady Toppers were able to hold on for the 25-20 first-set win.
The second set started slow with each team trading points with six ties, including at 6-6. The Flyers used a 4-0 run, capped by a kill from Turner, to pull away from the Lady Toppers, 10-6, forcing the WKU timeout. Dayton earned the six-point lead, 13-7, courtesy of an assisted block from sophomore Jill Loiars and Campbell.
Krafka served up an ace to stretch the Flyer lead to six again, 20-14, and Turner's strong swing set the score in favor of UD at 23-15. A senior Shayne Brown service ace set up set-point for Dayton and, despite back-to-back points from Western Kentucky, the Flyers claimed the 25-17 win in the second set to even the match at 1-1.
Western Kentucky opened the third game with a 5-0 run and the Lady Topper lead was seven, 14-7, when a kill from Campbell gave UD the serve. WKU led by as many as nine before UD rallied for an 8-1 run, pulling to within two, 19-17. Dayton trailed by three, 22-19, when Brown's serve trickled over the net and onto the floor. The Flyers followed that with an assisted block from Jendryk and Campbell but the Lady Toppers reached set-point first at 24-21. WKU picked up the 25-22 win in the third frame and headed into the fourth game with the 2-1 lead.
A WKU attacking error knotted the fourth set a three each and a kill from Turner capped a 5-0 UD run to give the Flyers the 6-3 advantage. Western Kentucky battled back to tie the set at 9-9 and took the 15-13 lead on back-to-back kills from Paige Wessel. UD trailed by as many as eight, 23-15, before putting together a late rally, saving six match points, to pull within two, 24-22. WKU called for timeout but out of the break, the Lady Toppers sealed the 25-22 fourth-set win and took the match, 3-1.
The Lady Toppers were led by Wessel with a match-high 21 kills and Ashey Potts got under a match-high 23 digs.
The Flyers return to action Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. match against Western Michigan at Frericks Center.
