NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference released the 2014 Men's Soccer Championship bracket Sunday and featured the University of Dayton as the No. 8 seed.
The Flyers will take on regular season champions and top-seeded Rhode Island Thursday in the opening round of the conference tournament on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 11 a.m.
Dayton and Rhode Island met earlier this season back on Oct. 19 in Kingston, R.I. and it took an overtime goal by the Rams to defeat the visiting Flyers.
The Flyers finished the regular season with a 7-6-5 record overall and 3-3-2 in A-10 play. They finished in a three-way tie for sixth with La Salle and Fordham, but lost the tiebreakers for tournament seeding.
A-10 regular season champions Rhode Island dominated A-10 play with a 7-1 record in conference action and an 11-4-3 record overall this season. Their lone conference loss came at 16
th-ranked Saint Louis last Sunday, 1-0. Prior to that, the 21
st nationally ranked Rams had been on an 11 game winning streak. This season has been a drastic improvement from last year when Rhode Island was winless in conference games.
UD will have another shot at Rhode Island this Thursday morning with the winner advancing to the semifinals.
In the second game on Thursday No. 4 seed and 2013 tournament champion George Mason will take on A-10 newcomer and No. 5 seed Davidson at 2 p.m.
The third quarterfinal match-up features No. 2 seed Saint Louis and No. 7 seed La Salle at 5 p.m.
The final game of the opening round pits hosts and No. 3 seed VCU against No. 6 seed Fordham at 8 p.m.
The winner of Dayton/Rhode Island will face the winner of George Mason/Davidson while the winner of Saint Louis/La Salle will place the winner of VCU/Fordham. Those games will be played Friday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively.
The championship game will be played Sunday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium on the campus of VCU.
