ELON, N.C. - In its final game of the 2014 Elon Phoenix Tournament, the University of Dayton softball team fell 7-2 to Presbyterian at Elon's Hunt Softball Park. Freshmen Katie Ryan and Gabrielle Snyder both knocked out their first career home runs for the Flyers.
Senior Rachel Archer and Snyder each tallied to hits on the afternoon for Dayton (4-10).
Presbyterian (6-6) out-hit UD, 9-5, while neither team committed an error.
PC got off to a quick start with a two-out homer to left field in the first inning, taking the 1-0 lead. The Blue Hose put up a five-spot on four hits in the second starting off with a bases-loaded two-RBI single followed by a triple to left center, plating two more runners. PC added a double to left center to bring home the Blue Hose final run of the frame as Dayton trailed, 6-0.
The Flyers got on the board in the bottom of the third as Ryan led off with her first career home run and, despite getting a runner in scoring position, Dayton couldn't convert an the score remained 6-1 through four complete innings.
With a runner at third, Presbyterian singled her in to score the Blue Hose final run of the game in the fifth. Dayton's Snyder led off the bottom of the seventh with her first career home run to give the Flyers a run back but the rally was ended and the Blue Hose took the 7-2 win.
Snyder (3-3) was charged with the loss in the circle for the Flyers after throwing 1.2 innings. She struck out one while walking two and gave up six earned runs on four hits. Sophomore Emily Froment worked 5.1 innings for UD, striking out three and walking one while giving up one earned run on five hits.
Seigler (4-4) collected the win for the Blue Hose after tossing all but one out of the game. She gave up two earned runs on four hits. Loudermelk closed out the game for PC, striking out one and giving up one hit.
The Flyers return to action next weekend when they travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for the Colorado State Classic. UD will face off against Nebraska Omaha Friday, March 7 at 11 a.m.
